Hip and pelvic pain during pregnancy or after delivery is a common problem in young females, and ... more Hip and pelvic pain during pregnancy or after delivery is a common problem in young females, and in most cases this problem has a self-limiting course. The patient described in this case suffered from severe hip pain after childbirth. MR imaging study was performed and it showed arthritis of bilateral hip joints and osteomyelitis of femoral heads with an abscess in the surrounding muscle. Infection, such as septic arthritis or osteomyelitis, is an extremely rare cause of peripartum joint pain. The patient's clinical symptoms and laboratory findings improved with antibiotic therapy. However, limitation of motion of the bilateral hip joints persisted although the patient continued rehabilitative therapy for 15 months, and the patient had to undergo bilateral total hip replacement. Hereby, we present a case of severe osteomyelitis and pyogenic arthritis of bilateral femoral heads and hip joints after delivery, which eventually required bilateral total hip replacement.

Research paper thumbnail of Bayesian Semi-parametric Analysis of Semi-competing Risks Data: Investigating Hospital Readmission after a Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis

These efforts generally focus on treatable health conditions, such as pneumonia and heart failure. Expanding quality of care systems to monitor conditions for which treatment options are limited or non-existent, such as pancreatic cancer, is challenging because of the non-trivial force of mortality; 30-day mortality for pancreatic cancer is approximately 30%. In the statistical literature, data that arise when the observation of the time to some non-terminal event is subject to some terminal event are referred to as 'semi-competing risks data'. Given such data, scientific interest may lie in at least one of three areas: (i) estimation/inference for regression parameters, (ii) characterization of dependence between the two events, and (iii) prediction given a covariate profile. Research paper thumbnail of The energy saving strategy using the network coding in the wireless mesh network

Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication - ICUIMC '12, 2012

To save the transmission power, the proposed scheme utilizes a network coding (NC) method. Since the quantity of the forwarded packets can be reduced by NC, the energy consumption for packet transmission (TX) can be reduced. However, the energy consumption for packet reception (RX) can be increased because the neighbor nodes should overhear and process the unnecessary packets. Simulation results show that the total power consumption can be reduced by 12.5% in the proposed scheme compared with the conventional schemes.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency is an autosomal recessiv... more Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency is an autosomal recessive disease, which leads to cortisol and aldosterone deficiency and hyperandrogenism. Typical medical treatment includes oral glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid administration to suppress adrenal androgens and to compensate for adrenal steroid deficiencies. However, some patients stopped taking medicine without the doctor's consent. Among these patients, four cases of CAH patients showing the presence of hyponatremia as an initial electrolyte disorder were found with adrenal adenoma. Hypersecretion of adrenocorticotrophic hormone and chronic poor compliance to therapy appears to be associated with the development of the adrenal tumor. Two cases were managed with adrenalectomy because of increasing adrenal tumor size and virilization. Whereas the other two cases did not increase in size and were observed without adrenalectomy. Therefore, it is important that patients with CAH maintain...

In our study, to examine the feasibility of making experimental aneurysm and selective angiography on the common carotid artery in rabbits and to determine the size of experimental aneurysm after surgery, saccular aneurysms were fashioned on the right common carotid artery in 17 rabbits using a vein pouch technique. Selective angiography of the common carotid artery was performed immediately after surgery, and at 1 week, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks after surgery. Also, histological changes in the aneurysms were observed. In 16 rabbits with established successful experimental aneurysm, no differences were found in diet intake and behavior before and after surgery. The patency of the carotid artery was confirmed by selective angiography. The average size of the aneurysm immediately after surgery was similar to that of 1 week postoperatively in selective angiography, however it increased with time at 4weeks and 8 weeks. Histologically, infiltration of inflammatory cells and hemorrhage were found at the junction of the carotid artery and the vein pouch at 1 week, which disappeared at 4 weeks and 8 weeks. This study suggests experimental saccular aneurysm using the vein pouch technique might form aneurysms similar to that of the human in its properties such as increment of size, and selective angiography might be suitable for assessment of experimental aneurysm. Therefore, this animal model may be suitable for investigating new treatment methodologies for human aneurysms.

Phenotype analyses of transgenic plants showed that overexpression of At sPLA 2 ␤ promotes cell elongation, resulting in prolonged leaf petioles and inflorescence stems, whereas RNA interferencemediated silencing of At sPLA 2 ␤ expression retards cell elongation, resulting in shortened leaf petioles and stems. At sPLA 2 ␤ is expressed in the cortical, vascular, and endodermal cells of the actively growing tissues of inflorescence stems and hypocotyls. At sPLA 2 ␤ then is secreted into the extracellular spaces, where signaling for cell wall acidification is thought to occur. At sPLA 2 ␤ -overexpressing or -silenced transgenic plants showed altered gravitropism in inflorescence stems and hypocotyls. At sPLA 2 ␤ expression is induced rapidly by auxin treatment and in the curving regions of inflorescence stems undergoing the gravitropic response. These results suggest that At sPLA 2 ␤ regulates the process of cell elongation and plays important roles in shoot gravitropism by mediating auxin-induced cell elongation.

Research paper thumbnail of Conservation of sequence and expression of Xenopus and zebrafish dHAND during cardiac, branchial arch and lateral mesoderm development

To better understand the evolutionary development of overlapping expression and function of the HAND genes during embryogenesis, we cloned the zebra®sh and Xenopus orthologues. Comparison of dHAND sequences in zebra®sh, Xenopus, chick, mouse and human demonstrated conservation throughout the protein. Expression of dHAND in zebra®sh was seen in the earliest precursors of all lateral mesoderm at early gastrulation stages. At neurula and later stages, dHAND expression was observed in lateral precardiac mesoderm, branchial arch neural crest derivatives and posterior lateral mesoderm. At looping heart stages, cardiac dHAND expression remained generalized with no apparent regionalization. Interestingly, no eHAND orthologue was found in zebra®sh. In Xenopus, dHAND and eHAND were co-expressed in the cardiac mesoderm without the segmental restriction seen in mice. Xenopus dHAND and eHAND were also expressed bilaterally in the lateral mesoderm without any left-right asymmetry. Within the branchial arches, XdHAND was expressed in a broader domain than XeHAND, similar to their mouse counterparts. Together, these data demonstrate conservation of HAND structure and expression across species. q

Blue emission using a thin In(Ga)N well width grown with only trimethylindium as a III-source showed strong carrier localization originating from a large fluctuation in indium composition and a reduced quantumconfined Stark effect due to the use of a thin well, both of which enhanced quantum efficiency. In contrast, an increase in InN growth time to achieve green emission exhibited a large blueshift of electroluminescent emission under forward-bias current and microstructural defect formation, which were responsible for the observed degradation in emission properties. r

Research paper thumbnail of Influence of growth temperature and reactor pressure on microstructural and optical properties of InAlGaN quaternary epilayers

The effects of growth temperature and reactor pressure on the microstructural and optical propert... more The effects of growth temperature and reactor pressure on the microstructural and optical properties of InAlGaN quaternary epilayers grown on thick GaN buffer by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition were investigated. The addition of Al atoms at the optimized growth temperature of an InGaN layer resulted in deep level emission and in pyramidal shaped surface pits due to island growth caused by the low mobility of the deposited Al atoms in spite of the reduction of in-plane misfit strain and full width at half maximum from high-resolution X-ray diffraction. As the growth temperature increased and reactor pressure decreased, the broad deep level emission and the density of surface pits were greatly reduced and the band-edge emission of InAlGaN epilayers was intense. Surface pits originating from the vertex of threading dislocations under high misfit strain were greatly affected by lowering the growth temperature while the band-edge emission strongly depended on reactor pressure. Therefore, we found that the reduced reactor pressure and the increased growth temperature enhanced lateral growth and were effective in growing the InAlGaN epilayers of optically and microstructurally good quality.
