The existence of Bantaeng in the historical era is evidenced by the existence of a kingdom that in the seventeenth centuries AD made Islam as the official religion of the kingdom. Traces of Islamization in Bantaeng can be proven by the existence of ancient tombs found inland and coastal areas. Ancient tombs as remains of material culture become objects of archaeological study that can reveal various meanings, including the development of a society's culture. Through archaeological research that applies a qualitative approach, the diversity of architectural forms of the tomb has been identified which is characterized by the attributes of stringed jirat, stone chest, variety of gunungan, statue headstone, and flora and calligraphy decorative motifs. The architecture of the tomb shows the phases of cultural development of the Bantaeng people starting from pre-Islamic, the beginning of Islamization and the period of Islam as the official religion of the kingdom. The results of this study show that the cultural development of the Bantaeng community is a continuation of the pre-Islamic tradition. During the Islamic period, the culture of the people experienced rapid development, it can be seen from the architecture of ancient tombs. The mixing of pre-Islamic culture, local people's way of life, and Islamic culture produces a hybrid tomb architecture.

Nevertheless, the challenges and risks inherent in maintaining stable populations on small islands can be offset or overcome through the use of maritime technologies and exchange networks. The archaeology of Here Sorot Entapa rockshelter (HSE) on Kisar Island in the Wallacean Archipelago provides an unparalleled record for examining these issues in Southeast Asia. Kisar is the smallest of the Wallacean islands known to have a Pleistocene occupation record, and one of the smallest permanently inhabited today. Our results indicate that Here Sorot Entapa was first occupied in the terminal Pleistocene by people with advanced maritime technology who made extensive use of local marine resources and engaged in social connections with other islands through an obsidian exchange network. As a result, populations appear to have been maintained on the island for approximately 6,000 years. In the early Holocene occupation at HSE ceased for unknown reasons, and the site was not reoccupied until the mid-Holocene, during which time a major change in the lithic resources can be observed and the exchange network appears to have ceased.

Recent discovery of painted rock art on Wetang Island in the Babar Island group, Maluku Province,... more Recent discovery of painted rock art on Wetang Island in the Babar Island group, Maluku Province, Indonesia, reflects the central place of boats in the daily lives of island peoples, as well as their paramount ritual and symbolic role in Maluku, and more broadly across Island Southeast Asia. In addition to boats, the Wetang sites contain images of domestic animals, as well as a unique image of an apparent macropod (a marsupial mammal of the family that comprises kangaroos and wallabies), a family not found on most of the Maluku islands today. The Wetang art sites have some geometric motifs in common with their neighbor island, Kisar, and we raise the possibility that these symbols may have operated as markers of family or clan identity and thus may inform on lineal ownership of land and relationships between these islands.
