Through our case study of a Brazilian not-for-profit focused on sustainability initiatives, we expand knowledge on organizational interactional processes as well as the communicative constitution of different Brazilian organizational environments, especially in the third (non-profit/non-governmental) sector. Because interaction is characterized as a necessary condition for organizational existence (Cooren, 2006), we analyze the multiple and layered interaction forms and map out how communication reveals itself within such an organizational environment. Based on thematic analyses of deep interviews with the entire NGO Board, we approach strategic interaction as imbricated layers of culture-centered processes–iterative, with multiple points of reference (see Taylor, 2011). We found five layered-linked themes that displayed how members entered into, thought a...
Within a constitutive framework, interaction dynamics and the construction of perceptions, sense ... more Within a constitutive framework, interaction dynamics and the construction of perceptions, sense and emotions relate to the making of meanings and countermeanings in dialogic cooperation with the self, other, and world (Deetz, 1995). Invoking the power of dialogism, reflexivity, speech acts, and perceptual encodings of realities, we layer meanings and countermeanings within actual organizational practices to point out the contrariety, opposite, antagonistic, adverse. We find that it is only within discussion and dialogue that the countersense through which meaning, learning, contrariety, and respect for differences is aroused as countermeanig – all this composite viewed as a deal process. A fundament for the concept of countermeaning is found in literature with Babuts‟ (1987) appraisal of Gustave Flaubert‟s approach to “a clearer perceptual encoding of the essential features and syntax of the real.” Here, knowing the world through its symbolic representation in the circuit of our br...

Therefore, it is necessary to consider the strategic thinking as a continuous process, which gives life to the organization. This process builds and develops knowledge and strategic actions that favor the exchange of ideas, perfect dialogues and strengthens relations between individuals. By bringing strategic thinking to the discussion of communication, it is revealed that the initiative of individuals and the dynamics of the organization are essential ingredients for that strategic thinking is a practice of organizational routine, which makes it a value for people in the organization. Quantitative and qualitative research are adopted as instruments, using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, respectively. The main quantitative results indicate the strategy formulation from a strategic planning, being restricted to ...

Conversely, it is understood that sustainability, as value and organizational practice, requires the balance in thinking and acting, with regard to economic, social, environmental and cultural aspects. In this context, the aim of this essay is to reflect on discourses and sustainability practices , highlighting the actions of individuals in cultural change that is necessary for the construction of new organizational realities. By questioning "sustainable organizations", within a scenario of low effectiveness of actions, it discusses the stakeholders relations policy, especially with employees. It supports the process of managing people centered on a communicative perspective that suggests the dialogue as a strategy for designing sustainability as a real value.

With publicity and events surrounding the 2016 Olympics, reports celebrated the human and biodiversity in Brazil but also displayed the poverty, political instabilities, and crime in Brazil, as well as consequences of the Brazilian Zika virus (Cugola et al., 2016). With such broad and deep opportunities and needs in Brazil, NGOs feel pressures from diverse sectors and challenges inherent in the meanings and conduct of sustainability work itself. Specifically, Brazilian NGO and global professionals engaging in sustainability efforts, find that they must manage tensions in their political positions, social practices, and daily activities (Fátima do Carmo Guerra, dos Santos de Sousa Teodosio, & Mswaka, 2016; Mackin, 2016; see Mitra & Buzzanell, 2017). These tensions are symbolic as they enact work that they perceive to be meaningful but frustrating, and material as they seek impact through short-term deliverables but struggle with long-term solutions within complex interdependent human and material systems (Fátima do Carmo Guerra et al., 2016; Mitra & Buzzanell, 2017). Tensions also emerge in their internal and external ethical responsibilities, including their communicative labor. According to Mumby (2016; see also Carlone, 2008), communicative labor refers to processes of mutuality, authenticity, and affect through which people share experiences. Applied to branding, communicative labor is key to the creation of value in work, production and consumption, and erosion of personal life through emphasis on labor (Mumby, 2016; see also communicative labor affirming hard work as virtuous, in Dempsey & Sanders, 2010). Applied to NGOs, Dempsey (2009) explores how grassroots organizations, particularly environmental justice and sustainability NGOs, engage in communication labor, defined here as the creation of distinctive organizational identities 709325S GOXXX10.

The risk communication was created to bridge the gap existing between the technical-scientific risk information and the perception the subjects have on the risk, instigating the awareness on the frailties the risk situations represent. Therefore, it sought to present evidences on how BASF relates with its public in the sense of communicating risks and preserving the health and physical integrity of the involved subjects. In order to perform this research, semi-structured interviews were held with former employees of the company, as well as analyzing the documents that provide information on the case. Such analysis and the interviews revealed that, even though the company stated having risk communication as a practice, the impact of its actions on the affected public shows otherwise: a mismatch between its speech and practices.
