Research paper thumbnail of Substituted dithiomalonamides as inhibitor for the corrosion of AISI 304SS in phosphoric acid-hydrochloric acid mixture

The percentage inhibition efficiencies have been found to increase with increasing concentrations of inhibitors. 1,5-Di-p-methylphenyl-2,4-Dithiomalonamide was found to be the most effective inhibitor followed by: 1,5-Di-p-methoxyphenyl-2,4-Dithiomalonamide, 1,5-Di-phenyl-2,4-Dithiomalonamide, 1,5-Di-p-chlorophenyl-2,4-Dithoimalonamide. Marked influence of the inhibitors is observed in decreasing the critical current density and enlarging the passive range. (Authors)

The study aimed to investigate the anti-arthritic potential and possible mechanism of DMC in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) arthritis rat model. Rat paw edema, body weight changes, alterations in hematological (Hb, RBC, WBC and ESR) and biochemical parameters were observed. ELISA analysis was performed to detect serum TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 followed by real-time RT-PCR for determining pro/anti-inflammatory markers in synovium tissue. DMC (60 mg/kg b.w.) significantly ameliorated paw swelling and regained the body weight loss. Also DMC treatment brought back the altered hematological and biochemical parameters comparable to non-immunized rats. DMC administration remarkably suppressed the overproduction and mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 in contrast to IL-10, which was markedly increased by DMC treatment. Dramatic inhibition of histopathological and radiological changes caused by FCA injection was observed in DMC treated group. Taken together, the study demonstrates that DMC is an effective anti-arthritic fraction from the group of curcuminoids responsible for the anti-inflammatory and reparative effects, which could be mediated via decrease in mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 and increase of IL-10.

However, bone marrow cell proliferation and differentiation remained unaffected (A. Kumar and S.M. Singh, Immunol. Cell Biol., 73, 220-225). The present investigations were undertaken to study the effect of DL growth on the blastogenic response of splenocytes. A decrease in the wet weight of the spleen and in the count of splenocytes was observed at the early DL-bearing stage which, however, increased through the mid and late stages of the tumor growth. In vitro, the blastogenic response of the splenocytes of DL-bearing mice to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was low at the early stage of the tumor, and subsequently increased at the mid and late stages. Macrophage-derived nitric oxide (NO) was found to be involved in regulating the blastogenic response of the splenocytes. DL cells are thus shown to influence splenocyte blastogenesis by altering the NO production of splenic macrophages.

Research paper thumbnail of A Frameshift Mutation Affecting the Carboxyl Terminus of the Simian Virus 40 Large Tumor Antigen Results in a Replication- and Transformation-Defective Virus

The mutated DNA specifies an 84,000-dalton large tumor antigen that consists of approximately equal to 75,000 daltons encoded by the wild-type reading frame and 9,000 daltons, by the alternative reading frame (wild-type large tumor antigen is approximately equal to 82,000 daltons). The frameshifted carboxyl terminus of the protein bears a strong similarity to the same region of polyoma virus middle-sized tumor antigen. We have found that the mutant DNA is unable to replicate when introduced into permissive monkey cells and incapable of transforming nonpermissive mouse cells.
