These are vascular or nonvascular masses of myogenic origin. We present a rare case of leiomyoma arising from the nasal septum and discuss its management using KTP 532 laser.

We are flooded with new revelations about the virus characteristics, morbidity and mortality statistics especially of the health care workers. More than six months have passed and we still have no definite treatment. These factors are affecting our medical practices in an unprecedented manner. This is a web based survey from 144 practicing otorhinolaryngologists to ascertain some of the aspects in which this pandemic has affected our practice. Majority are following protective protocols, not delaying tracheostomy or emergencies. They are avoiding aerosol generating procedures, endoscopies, prolonged surgeries, as well as oncosurgeries. Patients have decreased but covid phobia patients have increased. There is a lot of scope of improvement with regards to teleconsultations, training for donning and doffing of PP

Recent and updated culture and sensitivity data are an imperative tool in achieving this goal. Empirical antibiotics lead to the development of resistant organisms. Aims: This study aimed to identify the most common organisms in chronic otitis media and to study the current sensitivity and resistance patterns to the antibiotics. Settings and Design: This was a retrospective descriptive study. Subjects and Methods: Retrospective data were collected for patients visiting the outpatient department of the department of otorhinolaryngology from May 2019 to September 2020, who underwent culture and sensitivity for ear discharge. Results: Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common organism isolated (54.6%) and showed the highest sensitivity toward piperacillin/tazobactam and polymyxin-B (96.4%). Staphylococcus aure...

Research paper thumbnail of Study of cardiovascular effects of occlusive nasal packing versus minimal packing following nasal surgeries

MedPulse International Journal of ENT, 2017

A total of forty patients were studied. Twenty patients were given a totally occlusive nasal pack and twenty patients had minimal packing. All patients underwent 24 hour holter monitoring and SAECG pre and postoperatively. In holter monitoring there was a significant increase in minimum and maximum heart rates in the patients in group 2 (patients with minimum packing). Heart rate variability studied by spectral analysis showed a significant increase in HF domain in both the groups indicating an increase in parasympathetic stimulation in both the groups. The intergroup difference was statistically not significant. There was a decrease in the LF domain noted in the group 1 but an increase in the same in group 2. This indicates an increase in the sympathetic stimulation in the group 2 which can also explain a greater increase in the minimum and maximum heart rates in group 2. There was no statistical difference between the two groups. There was no arrhythmia noted in either group pre or post operatively. The QRSD and RMS40 studied in SAECG did not show any statistical difference between the two groups. Increased parasympathetic stimulation in both the groups can be explained by the nasocardiac reflex. A greater increase in the minimum and maximum heart rates in group 2 shows possibly lesser magnitude of vagal stimulation in this group due to minimal pressure on the nasal mucosa. No changes in SAECG parameters can be explained by a relatively lesser sympathetic stimulation in both the groups. We concluded that there was no significant difference in cardiac effects between completely occlusive or minimal packing post nasal surgery in a relatively healthy patient group. This needs further evaluation with a larger study in cardiac patients.

There are few established guidelines for evaluation. The etiology is varied so a thorough knowledge of clinical presentation is essential. Methods: A clinicopathological analysis of 150 cases of neck masses in children upto 12 years of age attending the outpatient clinic between Jan 2015 to June 2016 were included. Results: Maximum cases of reactive lymphadenopathy were found in our study 81 (20.7%), 23 (14.7%) thyroglossal cyst, 22 (14.7%) suppurative lymphadenopathy, mycobacterial lymphadenitis 20 (13.3%), dermoid cyst 17 (11.3%), branchial cyst 15 (10%), tubercular abscess 10 (6.7%), 3 cases (2%) each of Hodgkins lymphoma, lipoma, non-Hodgkins lymphoma were seen. FNAC was conclusive in 140 cases (93.4%). Conclusions: Percentage wise inflammatory etiology was the commonest (55.4%) followed by congenital (38.6%) and last was neoplastic (6 %). An orderly and...

This commonly involves the sinonasal tract and estimated incidence is 2-11 percent. But it can aiso involve the nasopharynx, base of tongue and hypopharynx. There are little data on the biological behaviour of these tumours. Treatment is usually on the lines of squamous cell carcinoma. In this paper we attempt to discuss the clinical presentation, radiology, histopathological features and clinical features of this infrequently encountered tumor by means of three cases, which we encountered

Those who fail conservative management, a definitive surgery is essential to achieve sufficient ventilation and drainage of the affected sinuses by using either microdebrider or conventional instruments for functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). A prospective study was conducted on 40 cases of nasal polypi in a tertiary care hospital. 20 cases were operated by conventional endoscopic instruments and 20 using the microdebrider. The study aimed at comparing the intra operative (blood loss, duration of surgery) and post operative results (crusting, scarring, discharge, symptoms, recurrence) between the two groups using Lund-Mackay scoring system and the data was statistically analysed. There was no statistically significant difference in surgical outcome for patients when either conventional endoscopic instruments or microdebrider was used. However, there was a significant symptomatic improvement in cases undergoing micro...
