The major risk factor for neonatal disease is vaginal colonization of GBS during pregnancy and delivery. 1) To study the incidence of vaginal colonization of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) among pregnant women. 2) To compare the efficacy of sheep blood agar vs selective medium like HiCHROME Strep B Selective agar (HIMEDIA) in the isolation of GBS. Vaginal swabs were collected from 150 antenatal women at 35-37 weeks of gestation or at any gestational age if additional risk factors were present. The swabs were cultured on non-selective medium like Blood agar and a chromogenic medium (HiCHROME Strep B Agar, HiMedia). GBS was identified by standard microbiological techniques. Bluish, purple-colored colonies were confirmed as GBS by CAMP test and latex agglutination test. Onl...

Research paper thumbnail of A study on Catheter related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) in Intensive care unit patients in a tertiary care hospital

Knowledge about CRBSIs would help in improving infection control practices and managing nosocomial sepsis. Objectives:To study the prevalence of central venous catheter related blood stream infections and to identify clinical risk factors & the microbiological profile of organisms causing CRBSI. Materials & Methods: This was a prospective observational study carried out in the medical ICU of Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, over a period of one year from March 2014 to February 2015. All adult non-immunocompromised patients admitted to the Intensive care unit(ICU), who had a non-tunnelled Central venous catheter(CVC) insertedwere included. Blood cultures were taken at the time of CVC insertion. At the time of removal, catheters were cultured using semi-quantitative method(SQC) of Makialong with a paired peripheral blood culture. The incidence of BSI was m...

Research paper thumbnail of Bacteriological Profile and Resistance Pattern of Blood Culture Isolates in a Tertiary Hospital in Port-Harcourt, Nigeria

International Journal of TROPICAL DISEASE & Health, 2018

Hence, prompt diagnosis and antimicrobial treatment is required. The gold standard of making a diagnosis of septicaemia is the isolation of the offending pathogen from a blood culture. A knowledge of the bacteriological profile and susceptibility patterns of organisms isolated from blood culture will help guide the choice of empirical antibiotic administration in that institution. This study reports the bacterial profile of blood stream infections and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. Bacterial strains isolated from 623 blood cultures from various wards of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Nigeria, over a period of 24 months were retrospectively analyzed for frequency of isolation, susceptibility profile, age and gender distributions. Overall prevalence yield from blood culture was 22.5% and gram negative bacilli accounted for Original Research Article

We observe that reducing this waste requires tuning data storage and compute structures and their connectivity to the data-flow and data-locality patterns in the algorithms. Hence, by backing off from full programmability and instead targeting key data-flow patterns used in a domain, we can create efficient engines that can be programmed and reused across a wide range of applications within that domain. We present the Convolution Engine (CE)---a programmable processor specialized for the convolution-like data-flow prevalent in computational photography, computer vision, and video processing. The CE achieves energy efficiency by capturing data-reuse patterns, eliminating data transfer overheads, and enabling a large number of operations per memory access. We demonstrate that the CE is within a factor of 2--3× of the energy and...

We observe that specialized units achieve most of their efficiency gains by tuning data storage and compute structures and their connectivity to the data-flow and datalocality patterns in the kernels. Hence, by identifying key data-flow patterns used in a domain, we can create efficient engines that can be programmed and reused across a wide range of applications. We present an example, the Convolution Engine (CE), specialized for the convolution-like data-flow that is common in computational photography, image processing, and video processing applications. CE achieves energy efficiency by capturing data reuse patterns, eliminating data transfer overheads, and enabling a large number of operations per memory access. We quantify the tradeoffs in efficiency and flexibility and demonstrate that CE is within a factor of 2-3x of the energy and area efficiency of custom units optimized for a single kernel. CE improves energy and area efficiency by 8-15x over a SIMD engine for most applications.

The architecture consists of two, one-dimensional discrete Fourier transform blocks connected via an intermediate buffer. The proposed architecture offers low latency as well as high throughput and can perform both oneand two-dimensional discrete Fourier transforms. The architecture supports transform length that is not power of two and not based on products of co-prime numbers. The simulation and synthesis were carried out using Cadence tools, NcSim and RTL Compiler, respectively, with 180 nm libraries.
