Bilingual educators "cheat" in classes where English as the only language of instruction is strictly imposed by school or district officials, but these teachers "cheat" by using the native language of their English language learners because they know they must. But, for many teachers in today's political and antagonistic anti-Mexican, anti-foreign language climate, not using a student's native language for instruction is the equivalent to injustice.

In the United States, one out of every five students from prekindergarten to 12th grade is from an immigrant family (Capps et al., 2005, p. 5). Of this student population, an estimated 5.4 million students are institutionally identified as "English language learners" (ELLs). These 5.4 million ELLs comprise recent immigrants to the United States and students born in the United States who enter school as ELLs and remain ELLs throughout their entire educational careers. Data from the Office of English Language Acquisition show that the growth of the ELL population has increased 65% since 1993, in comparison to a 9% increase in the general student population (U.S. Department of Education, 2004). The most recent data indicate the immigrant population is 55% Latin American, 25% Asian, and 17%

This study sought to yield insight into how students respond to the dynamics of fun integrated within an instructor's pedagogy in statistics, a subject that historically students struggle with and are unlikely to associate with fun. Researchers collected data throughout a single introductory statistics course taught at a mid-sized emerging research university by an instructor experienced in the use of fun as a way to engage learners on an emotional level. During the spring 2013 semester, data were collected from multiple classroom observations (field notes and transcribed audio) and interviews of individual students in the course; anonymous end-of-course evaluations were also included in the analysis. Findings from this case study reveal that students in the introductory statistics course valued the experience and engaged more readily with the course material. Some ultimately expressed that it led to a better understanding of the material although the study did not look at academic outcomes in relation to the pedagogy.

Research paper thumbnail of The Pedagogy of the Power and Influence of Film for Mexican-American Students in Today's Political Climate: A Case of the Discursive Construction of Extremist Ideologies on " Fixing " the Urban School " Problem

When the images of people of color are intertwined with ideological discourse and text in the film that further stereotypes or stigmatizes their community, it offers little glimpse into the other realities that overwhelmingly represent who such people really are and the struggles they endure. One especially egregious and dangerous public pedagogical practice that occurs through film is the intermingling of the reality/ies of urban schools and students of color with extremist ideologies in fictitious story plots. I argue that in today's anti-Mexican climate, we must look closely at the extremist ideologies that exist in many of today's films that contribute to the undercurrent pedagogy that is dominating the current discourse that influences how the mainstream think and react to people of Mexican-descent.

The learning of this pedagogy and ability to empower comes from the interactions they have with marginalized students and learning how to reveal what is making them silent and to create space for their voice. Much of this discovery of self and others comes in their preparation to become teachers, which must be facilitated by teacher educators beyond the classroom. As future teachers of the marginalized, in these lived encounters, they realize that they already have much to build on from their own experiences and that they have the ability to teach and create change in our schools and classrooms now.

Woven within the details of the court cases presented, Valencia argues that racism and discrimination based on language and identity were at the root of segregationist mentalities and practices in the schooling of Mexican Americans. Through the lenses of Critical Race Theory, Legal Indeterminacy, and Postcolonial Theory, he reveals how such ideologies dominated the social and educational landscape for decades, until Mexican American citizens challenged the educational establishment and created precedence for reform.
