Higher education in many developing countries including Nigeria confronts many problems. Curricul... more Higher education in many developing countries including Nigeria confronts many problems. Curricula are often dominated by liberal subjects thereby making education provided by higher education institutions in the country more of liberal education than vocational, technical and other forms of entrepreneurship education. The high number of unemployed graduates in the country is becoming unbearable by the day. The cause of this is not unconnected with the fact that many higher education graduates are without employable skills. This paper, consequently, gives an overview of the National Policy on Education (NPE) on higher education in Nigeria. It reviews those aims and objectives of higher education that have to do with skills acquisition and development. The definition and concept of higher education, skill acquisition and development, training and both individual and societal needs are considered. This study examined the similarities and differences in the processes and facilities for distance... more This study examined the similarities and differences in the processes and facilities for distance education at National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), a single-mode distance learning institution, and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, a dual-mode distance learning institution. The study adopted a case study research design, with a population of administrators/facilitators and distance learning students at both NOUN and OAU. The sample for the study consisted of 38 key informants (30 administrators/facilitators and 8 students) selected using a purposive sampling technique. All the administrators/facilitators responded to a key informant questionnaire; 8 of the administrators/facilitators and all 8 students were also interviewed. The 16 interviewees were selected based on gender, institution, educational role, and mode of distance learning. It is imperative that the modern world demands vocational and technological skills for an individual to be relevant especially, in the labour market. This then means that Nigerian schools, no less than her junior secondary schools, should equip the pupils with necessary and relevant computer and information and technology (ICT) skills. Today, we talk about the world being a global village. This is made possible by advanced technology especially (ICT). This paper assesses acquisition of entrepreneurial skills by polytechnic students in Osun State, ... more This paper assesses acquisition of entrepreneurial skills by polytechnic students in Osun State, Nigeria. It identifies courses through which entrepreneurial skills could be acquired; examines availability of training facilities; determines whether or not polytechnic students do the mandatory industrial training or students' industrial work experience scheme, and find out attitudes of students to entrepreneurial skills acquisition. Survey research design was used. The population comprised all the polytechnic students in Higher National Diploma (HND). The sample comprised 300 participants from purposefully selected three government-owned polytechnics. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze data gathered through structured questionnaire. The results showed that there were over 50 entrepreneurship-based courses offered in polytechnics in the State. Availability of relevant skills training facilities was lacking. Both the industrial training and students' industrial work experience scheme positively contributed to acquisition of skills. Students' attitudes towards entrepreneurial skills acquisition were poor. Relevant workable recommendations were suggested.

Recommendations on ensuring productive implementation of the prescriptions in the NPE as regards higher education in Nigeria are consequently made.
