Social equity has been recognized globally as an important contributing factor for inclusive grow... more Social equity has been recognized globally as an important contributing factor for inclusive growth and has been the focus of programming by many governments. The present study considers the status of social equity in Madhya Pradesh with special reference to health, education and socioeconomic aspects of social development. The policies along with central/state schemes focusing on sectors such as education, health, nutrition, WASH and tribal development have been reviewed. Attention was given to understand the impact of existing policies/schemes and to determine the gaps in the existing system. The paper is organized as follows. In the first phase, the study analyses the status of health, education, nutrition, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sectors in Madhya Pradesh. Secondly, the global perspective is given in the local context to understand the various factors influencing the outcome indicators. Thirdly, policy prescription and recommendations are provided to confirm that the strategies and policies will be able to address those bottlenecks. These findings could have significant implications for the policies aiming to reduce social disparity and inequalities in the state.

Human development has remained one of the major concerns for social planners and policy makers ov... more Human development has remained one of the major concerns for social planners and policy makers over time. While improvements in human development aspects like health, decline in fertility, and an increase in longevity are desirable, the projected increase of the elderly population over the next few decades is emerging as serious development concern that warrants priority. The Paper is a first-of-its-kind attempt by Poverty Monitoring and Policy Support Unit (PMPSU) of Madhya Pradesh State Planning Commission to outline the situation analysis and major Issues that affect the elderly and review of existing gaps in policy and practice. This Paper is a compilation of various reviews, fact sheets and research articles to highlight the contrast of the happy picture of increased longevity, and the prospect of long years of hopelessness, bereft of family and society. Finally, it provides suggestive measures so that the ‘golden age’ does not become synonymous with ‘destitution’ for about two-thirds of the elderly population in the country.

The safeguards intend at avoiding and mitigating undue community damage and their environment in all the development process. They provide guiding principles for the bank and borrowers in the identification, preparation, and execution of programs and projects. Compliance with the safeguards by the bank and the borrower is one of the challenges of their effective implementation. The main purpose of the paper is to assess the effectiveness of complying with WB safeguards. Based on grassroots planning, recent developments in the state of Madhya Pradesh (MP), India may ... more Based on grassroots planning, recent developments in the state of Madhya Pradesh (MP), India may be characterised as systematic efforts to promote the decentralisation of governance. There has been a continuous struggle towards evolving democratic governance that provides for the participation of citizens in the developmental process. However, owing to vast inter- and intra-country differences, no single method has been set so far as a model for others to follow, although each effort contributes towards further deliberation and evolution. For the first time in the development history of MP, the government has shown the courage to interact with the community for making local development plans. This paper evaluates the adequacy of the decentralisation framework and mechanism of governance adopted by the state to achieve the desirable goal of participatory democracy.

assistance conceptualized and prepared by the Poverty Monitoring and Policy Support Unit team is an attempt to support policy
holders on focus efforts for external aid agencies particularly DFID and to highlight some of the major issues and concerns
regarding DFID support in the form of bilateral partnership in India . Looking at the key areas of DFID support, this paper is
divided into few sections and sub- section. After the background aspect, Section 1.1 summarizes the external contribution in the
education sector. Section 1.2 is an overview on health support scenario including National Aids Control Programme and
development co-operation. Section 1.3 provides a brief on support for urban poverty reduction efforts with the DFID support
while Section 1.4 gives a summary of private sector assistance; Section 1.5 highlights the partnership towards climate change,
section 1.6 gives an overview of the overall efficacy support in making good governance and in section 1.7 Finally, article
concluded with few issues and strategic suggestions to improve overall partnership scenario with external aid agencies.
