While improvement has been shown, extrapolation of the gains of the last 40 years in the field show that it could take over 100 years for disadvantaged groups to catch up with their more advantaged peers, should the current rate of improvement be maintained. Many of the traditional approaches to improving equity have also necessitated large-scale public investments, in the form of direct support to underrepresented groups. In an age of austerity, many countries in Europe are finding it necessary to revisit and scale down these policies, so as to accommodate other p...

It is part of a series of events on the theme of Freud and Love. Freud & Eros: Love, Lust and Longing is a new exhibition at the Freud Museum London, running from 22 October 2014 – 8 March 2015. The exhibition looks at Sigmund Freud's revolutionary ideas on love and the libidinal drive through Freud's own art collection and his passionate courtship of his wife Martha Bernays. The exhibition is accompanied by an exciting programme of talks, performance, classes and events, including this ebook, event and conference. From January 2015 we will be asking you what you know about love - from how to get on with your family to how to turn your office into a love grotto. You are cordially invited to join us on this journey which we are calling #LoveAmateurs on @survivingwk and www.survivingwork.org.

It can even be argued that sociology as a discipline emerged from philosophy precisely as an attempt to contain violence by means of understanding the ways in which people can peacefully co-exist in a society. And yet violence itself is a phenomenon traditionally avoided by sociology. This thesis approaches the issues related to violence through the prism of the ways in which practitioners working in support of survivors endeavour to understand the problem. It is thus a second order critical study of sociological explorations of violence. The thesis begins by mapping the field of sociological exploration of the problem and reviewing the debates related to ...

The labour market is polarised between high-skilled and low-skilled, and competition for work is strong as jobs in London often attract people from wide areas. People with low skills who are in employment are often stuck at low pay. This is problematic given London's high cost of living. Alongside inactive and unemployed people on benefits who struggle to access the labour market, there are persistent pockets of deprivation and poverty in West London. There are also specific educational needs among Black, Minority and Ethnic (BAME) communities in West London, such as language learning and barriers in recognition of foreign qualifications and skills.
