(comment on this) Tuesday, February 28th, 2006 9:35 pm - The "Tantalus" Principle delyera I'm not sure if anyone's all that familiar with Greek mythology, but I'm going to relay the story of Tantalus. He abused the privilege of eating with the gods and was sentenced to everlasting hunger and thirst in the Underworld. Food and water always were just out of his reach and just as he got close to them, they were jerked away. The closer he would come, the more desperate he would get. In other words: he was being tantalised.This brings me to an interesting idea: many people constantly want what they can't have simply because they can't have it. It's like the "forbidden fruit" - the more it's off-limits, the more appealing it is.I see the story of Tantalus all around me, day in and day out. People take advantage of something and then once it's gone, they keep aching for what will never be, even more so than when it was easily accessible. Why can't people simply accept what they presently have? I think it's the idea of "the grass is always greener" alongside with the "Tantalus" Principle, but who knows? (comment on this) Monday, February 27th, 2006 7:42 pm delyera As I watched a tiny (but in my eyes, HUGE) house centipede crawl its way towward my unsuspecting self this evening, I screamed in horror and jumped onto my bed (a la every cheesy cartoon where the wimpy woman jumps on a chair to get away from a mouse), where it joined me soon after.Why should everyone care?This is why.I'm sitting here (NOT IN MY HOUSE) wondering why people tend to be afraid of such tiny things. It really can't hurt me, but I was REALLY scared of it. Granted, I sure didn't expect it in the middle of February in snow-covered Minnesota, but why was I so scared to the point of actually screaming? Why is it the natural tendency to balk at tiny creepy-crawlies?
