What makes the 2020 Census unique is that it not only helped us see the demographic picture in great detail, but the process itself reflected the state of the country. Obstructionist legal battles, the COVID-19 pandemic, and wildfires made organizing the 2020 Census the most challenging in U.S. history, but the results were crucial to understanding the nation's trajectory. The U.S. Constitution calls for the census to provide accurate population statistics to allocate budgets to the states and seats in the House of Representatives, and thus in the electoral college. Clearer and more accurate than any other study, the 2020 Census showed that despite the slow growth and aging of the white population, the country has become much more racially diverse (especially among young people), with demographic and age gaps amply offset by immigrants from Latin America and Asia.

Meanwhile it has been 100 years since the US-Mexico border fencing construction began. The first fence was put up during the First World War, chapter two in the history of the wall (1993-2000) led to 200 km of fencing. 2006 marked the beginning of an ongoing third and most ambitious stage of the thousand-kilometer barrier construction. Sealing off the remaining 2 000 km of the border became D. Trump's main pitch during the election campaign, but in two years of his presidency no additional segments were actually built. After Congress refused to finance construction to the extent requested by the president, D. Trump declared a state of emergency, which implies redistributing Ministry of Defense budget funds, bypassing Congress in order to re-equip 376 km of the fence and build about 160 km of the wall. But the history of the American wall and the Israeli security barrier (which D. Trump likes to exemplify) shows that the construction is effective only as long as it is combined with the high-tech tracking methods that in the US can be introduced as of now, without building a physical barrier.

The only shift in this matter was B. Obama's executive order protecting from deportation the so-called "dreamers" (young illegal immigrants brought into the U.S. by their parents before the age of 18). "Dreamers" struggled to assert themselves as a political force, they managed to overcome the influence of major lobbying organizations and gain White House's attention. In 2020 Supreme Court will rule on the executive order that D. Trump decided to abolish. This could not only affect almost a million young people, but also the immigrant community as a whole. "Dreamers" have been able to find surprising allies among conservative lawyers and Republican Party donors, which undoubtedly increases their chance of success and gives hope for possible overcoming the conservatives' and liberals' polarization.
