This randomized clinical trial. patients randomized 1:1 to receive either topical ketorolac three times a day or a placebo. Methods A total of 101 eyes of 101 diabetic patients who were scheduled for phacoemulsification and had normal macular contour and thickness enrolled consecutively. The topical ketorolac and placebo were prescribed on the day before surgery and continued up to 4 weeks after surgery. Patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, a history of intravitreal injection in less than three months, a history of macular photocoagulation in less than 6 months, and any other concomitant ocular pathologies were excluded. Central macular thickness (CMT) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was recorded in the follow-ups of 6, 12, and 24 weeks after the surgery and compared with the controls. Results 49 eyes in the case group and 52 eyes in the control group were analyzed. Mean BCVA was significantly improved in both groups at all follow-ups (P < 0.001 for all). There was no statistically significant difference regarding the BCVA in different time points except week 12 (P = 0.028) among the study group. In the case and control groups, CMT was increased at all follow-ups (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference when comparing the two groups regarding the mean of CMT at any time point postoperatively (P > 0.05 for all). Conclusion Based on our findings, topical ketorolac tromethamine 0.5% is not effective in the prevention of postphacoemulsification macular thickening in diabetic patients. Trail registration The study protocol was registered into www.clinicaltrial.gov with the RCT registration number NCT03551808. (2018/06/11) Clinical trial registration number NCT03551808.

Bina Journal of Ophthalmology, Jan 10, 2014

To evaluate the corneal endothelial cell density and Polymegathism one year after laser assisted ... more To evaluate the corneal endothelial cell density and Polymegathism one year after laser assisted keratomileusis using mitomycin C. Methods: One hundred and three eyes from 52 patients who underwent laser assisted sub-epithelial keratomileusis using mitomycin C 0.02% for 30 seconds entered this study. Corneal endothelial cells were evaluated using specular microscopy before and one year after the surgery considering endothelial cell density and polymegathism. Also the corneal thickness was measured before and one year after the surgery. Results: The mean endothelial cell density before surgery was 2870±368/mm 2 , which changed to 2828±300/mm 2 one year after the surgery (P=0.182). Polymegathism was 24±7 before the surgery, which changed to 25±7 one year after the surgery (P=0.039). The average stromal ablation dept was 65 micron (22 to 131 micron) and the remaining corneal thickness one year after the surgery was 488±42 micron (405 to 567 micron) (p<0.001). Conclusion: Using mitomycin C (0, 02% for 30 seconds) during the laser assisted sub-epithelial keratomileusis did not significantly change the corneal endothelial cell density one year after the surgery but the change in polymegathism was significant.

In this study, we compared the effects of Propofol and Isoflurane on intraocular pressure among patients undergoing lumbar disk surgery. Patients and Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 60 patients who were candidates for lumbar disk surgery were randomly assigned into two groups: Propofol and Isoflurane groups. Intraocular Pressure was measured before and after induction of anesthesia in supine position, immediately after prone positioning of the patient and at the end of operation in prone position and also after turning the patients back to supine position. Mean arterial pressure, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rates were also assessed. Result: The baseline Mean Intraocular Pressure among awake patients in supine position in Isoflurane and Propofol groups were 15.8 ...

Report of the case: A 27-year-old man presented with a two-year history of blurred vision, photophobia, mild ocular pain and redness in his left eye, with no history of prolonged eye rubbing, ocular surface disease or any evidence of trauma. On exam there was redness and swelling of the eyelids in the involved side; however, there was no evidence of any long standing ocular surface condition. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy disclosed an injected eye with haptic exposure of an angle-supported anterior chamber lens approximately 1 mm posterior to the limbus through the sclera. Anterior chamber was mildly inflamed and pupil was peaked towards the area of the exposed haptic. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed edematous and thickened sclera near the exposed tip. The dislocated lens was extracted and an iris-fixated anterio...

The average stromal ablation dept was 65 micron (22 to 131 micron) and the remaining corneal thickness one year after the surgery was 488±42 micron (405 to 567 micro...

At each visit complete ophthalmic examination was performed and the success rate of surgery was assessed. Surgical success was defined as 5 ≤ IOP ≤ 21 mmHg and at least 20 % reduction in IOP without any glaucoma medication (complete success), or with the use of anti glaucoma medication (qualified success). The sum of complete and qualified success was reported as cumulative success. Results: The mean age of patients was 53.18 ± 16.92 years and the mean duration of follow up was 3.27 ± 2.36 years (range: 1-5 years). The complete surgical success rate was 20 % at 1 year, 18 % at ...

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Occupational Vibration on Human Retina Measured by Electroretinography

Patients and Methods: Fifty workers from a segment of a textile factory with machinery creating high levels of vibration were selected. The workers had at least 6 years history of working in the factory segment where high vibrating machines were operating. The amplitude and latency of electroretinogram b-wave peak and amplitude was compared between these selected workers and 50 age and sex matched controls from other sections of the factory. Results: The mean age was 27.5 + 1.741 years and 27.28 + 1.641 years in the case and control groups respectively. There was statistically significant lower mean amplitude of electroretinogram b-wave peak in the case group compared to the control group (P < 0.001). Also higher mean latency of the electroretinogram b-wave in the case group compared to the control group was observed (P < 0.001) Conclusion: Occupational vibration might have ...

Research paper thumbnail of Anterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Exposure through Prelimbal Sclera: a Case Report

Purpose: To report a case of spontaneous exposure of anterior chamber intraocular lens in a patie... more Purpose: To report a case of spontaneous exposure of anterior chamber intraocular lens in a patient with history of congenital cataract surgery ten years prior to presentation.
