Papuci-Władyka 2008a). the cooperation between Kraków and Warsaw in this particular area was initiated by Janusz a. Ostrowski (currently a professor at the Department of Classical archaeology at JU). as a young archaeologist he came to Paphos in 1968 to take part in the fourth excavation campaign (Michałowski 1974: 263; Daszewski 1970: 113). at the time, the southern and western parts of the Villa of theseus were being cleared and the architectural layout investigated [Fig. 1]. a long break followed until 1984, when the present author was invited by the director of the mission to join the team [Fig. 2, bottom]. i participated in the 1986 campaign and have been a permanent team member since 1988, supervising work especially in the so-called Hellenistic and early roman Houses [Fig. 2, top], preparing pottery from the Hellenistic period for publication and acting as translator thanks to my knowledge of modern Greek. My chief research interest in Paphos is the Hellenistic pottery (a somewhat neglected field so far), which i have presented regularly at specialist international Meetings on Hellenistic Pottery organized in Greece from 1986 (Papuci-Władyka 1991; 1993; Peignard-Giros, Papuci-Władyka 1997). During the third Meeting in thessaloniki in 1991 the closed deposit from cistern W/73 was presented (Papuci-Władyka 1994) and at the following conference in Mytilene on lesbos in 1994 other groups of Hellenistic pottery (Papuci-Władyka 1997a). all of the Hellenistic pottery finds from the site excavated between 1965 and 1991 were published in 1995 (Papuci-Władyka 1995a). the ceramics came mainly from mixed Hellenistic-roman layers, although there were also deposits from cisterns, pithoi, domestic rubbish dumps, floors and occupational levels as well as accumulation fill (for the most part from limited test pits), in which the Hellenistic pottery was not mixed with the roman [Fig. 3, top and bottom left]. this pottery was separated out and classified, and in many cases also dated. Categories of ceramic material included, apart from table pottery, plain ware, amphorae for transporting wine and other products, kitchen and storage vessels, comprising imported as well as locally made containers, either from Paphos or Cyprus in general. the quantity and variety of the pottery from Paphos, significantly greater than from other Cypriot Hellenistic centers,

Call for Papers EXTENDED until May 7th!

The Aqua Paphia workshop will focus on the role of water in the urban and cultural development of Nea Paphos andother Hellenistic-Roman cities in Cyprus and the wider Mediterranean region. The workshop will address questions such as: How was water provided and controlled within these cities? How did it affect their history and shape? What was its practical and symbolic meaning in the everyday life of the citizens? What can we learn about the local water culture from the archaeological remains? The main goal is to provide a platform for an international and interdisciplinary discussion to broaden our knowledge, identify new directions for future research, and establish optimal methodological practices relevant to the field.

Research paper thumbnail of Second call for papers- 3rd IARPotHP CONFERENCE: EXPLORING THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE ROLE OF CERAMICS IN UNDERSTANDING PLACE IN THE HELLENISTIC WORLD, KAŠTELA-CROATIA, 2017

One key feature of the Hellenistic world is its cosmopolitan nature that was created by decades o... more One key feature of the Hellenistic world is its cosmopolitan nature that was created by decades of interaction between peoples from different regions with distinctive cultural backgrounds. In this era of ever-increasing connectivity, at both regional and interregional levels, material culture can reflect the movement of people who took with them their own identities and attitudes. In many cases, these features were either retained or melded with local traditions into unique regional forms within the Hellenistic koine. Since ceramic shapes may be related to particular cultural activities and wares may be connected to certain regions, research on ceramic types and their distributions over a wide geographical area can reveal the behavior and movement of those who created and/or consumed them. We invite papers that focus on pottery studies and offer illuminating perspectives on these complex phenomena throughout the Hellenistic Mediterranean and beyond. As archaeometric methods are invaluable tools in the quest to reconstruct the dynamic past, we especially encourage the submission of papers that incorporate scientific techniques. In general, we would like participants to explore some of the following questions: • how may we relate the personal mobility to broader changes in society and culture? • what was the impact of the newly globalised economy on the processes of integration and acculturation in different communities? • how can archaeometric analyses help us evaluate population movements, daily behaviours and activities, and changing customs? If you wish to present a short paper or a poster at the conference, please send a completed registration form and a short abstract (max. 1 DIN A4-page) in English, French, German or Italian to the organisers of the conference by August 31, 2016, to: conf3@iarpothp.org Conference fee: for non-IARPotHP members € 50 (payment details will be announced later). Further information on the conference and a registration form are available on our homepage:

This publication opens a new publishing series — PAPHOS AGORA PROJECT. Its purpose is to publish research results of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Poland), project and cooperating institutions in the Agora and, more broadly, in the ancient city of NEA PAPHOS — a UNESCO world heritage site and a long-standing capital of Cyprus. This project has an international and interdiscplinary character. The first volume presents the first research results from the years 2011–2015. The volume comprises the aims, stages of development, methodology and chronology of PAP, history of research in the Agora and Nea Paphos, stratigraphy and architecture, pottery, lamps and terracottas, metal, stone and glass objects, animal bones, non-invasive prospection by the Hamburg University, and landscape research, as well as extensive summary of the results. Further volumes of the series are planned in the coming years.

The monuments of the cultural heritage of Paphos, like Kraków, have been present in the UNESCO list for years. The cultural heritage can be shown in many ways. On the following pages of this publication, we introduce it to the readers in the light of the so-called new technologies. Cultural heritage was the hero not only of this book, but also for the whole year 2018which has been announced as the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH). WE ar proud of the fact that this publication has been covered by the patronage of the EYCH 2018. We present the cities of Kraków and Paphos, pearls of thr UNESCO list, as well as the relations between Kraków and Cyprus, which are not limited to today's mass tourism but go back many centuries. The main part of th epublications contains 18 texts written by 35 authors; they are divers and show richness of the ne technologies used.

Stoves with a stand, fire bowl and three supports were very common in Middle and Late Hellenistic times (2nd century BCE and late 2nd century to 30 BCE, accordingly), but they do not seem to have been imported in large numbers to Cyprus. The paper discusses the finds from Cyprus, and from Paphos in particular, the island's capital from the end of the 3rd century BCE, which is where most of the finds come from. The research entails a re-examination of the stoves from the House of Dionysos (original spelling after Hayes 1991) and the mostly unknown material from the University of Warsaw excavations in the Maloutena area. Fabrics were distinguished by macroscopic observation with the naked eye using a hand lens, identifying macroscopic groups (MG). Paphos is suggested as a potential place of production, as well as a major importer of stoves, an idea that should be clarified by future archaeometric analyses.
