This essay is an attempt to comprehend the extraordinary case of public voice, where individuals ... more This essay is an attempt to comprehend the extraordinary case of public voice, where individuals entangle with the masses on the basis of structural location in the society. The historical trajectory of oppressed communities is that of rejection from the public sphere as Ambedkar propounded them as unseeable and unapproachable; Kanshiram thus created the counter-public with the idea of non-political roots. This essay will discuss at length Kanshiram’s foray into politics which stretched over a period of time. There are particularistic approach books that have documented this aspect of his biography. However, another attempt made in the essay will be to locate Kanshiram’s everyday moments with the public and political community. To make sense of the rapid rise of Kanshiram in India, this essay will analyse the period’s socio-political climate in its varied aspects as well as knowledge production within and outside the university. What type of language and vocabulary has been used by the public intellectual (from the margins) for cultural expression?
