Developing countries are striving to build their infrastructure to foster their economic growth. ... more Developing countries are striving to build their infrastructure to foster their economic growth. Authors discovered that continuous rising in the access to locations along with spending on infrastructure enhances the economic development and growth of developing countries. However, this development process comes with various challenges such as the right of way, traffic management, diversions, noise, vibration, dust etc. In addition to that, the weak performance of road construction projects in these countries can be attributed to the inefficient understanding and deployment of risk management. As a result of these challenges, residents, businesses, travellers etc. are subject to risks at different levels and magnitudes. This study aims to identify and measure the risks associated with infrastructure development within cities in the developing nations. A questionnaire is used as a tool for data collection; the collected data is then analysed using percentages and Risk Assessment Matrix (RAM). The study identifies the significant risks associated with road infrastructure development (i.e. Heavy, traffic, Dust and Accident and Destruction) in the cities and their severity. This study contributes to identifying rating and likelihood of the associated risks while evaluating the critical risks that needed attention.

Sustainable construction practices not only benefits government, environment and occupants but it... more Sustainable construction practices not only benefits government, environment and occupants but it secure the earth for future generations to come. Thus the paper discussing sustainable construction practices challenges in the construction industry of South Africa. Structured questionnaires were distributed to different construction companies and construction professionals. From the 75 questionnaires distributed, 60 were brought back and they were all valid and usable. Findings from the survey results obtained from the chosen respondents revealed that the is a lack of training in an organization regarding sustainable construction, lack of awareness of sustainable construction practices, lack of sustainable environmental materials, changes in material prices and escalations, lack of accessible guidance, lack of technical skills, resistance to change in adoption and material scarcity. The construction industry needs to promote and create more workshops on sustainable construction practices so that more stake holders would be aware of it benefits and incentives should be provided to organization that are implementing sustainable construction. Furthermore, the implementation of construction principles can be achieved successfully if all the construction stakeholders participates from design to completion of the project with the assistance of knowledgeable project manager on sustainable construction practices. The study will contribute to the body of knowledge by increasing more awareness of SC to professionals in order to be implemented. Construction disputes have a greater effects on the construction industry as opposed to other ind... more Construction disputes have a greater effects on the construction industry as opposed to other industries. Especially negative effects are prevalent on the project participants which lead to poor execution of the project. The study investigated the impact of disputes in construction projects in the Mpumalanga Province. The data used in this paper were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary data was collected via a detailed review of related literature. The primary data was collected through a survey questionnaire which was distributed to project participants. Out of the 90 questionnaires sent out, 80 were received back representing 89% response rate. Data received from the questionnaires were analysed using descriptive statistics procedures such as Ms Excel and SPSS software. Findings from the study revealed that; bad relationship between parties, loss of productivity, cost and time overruns, loss of company reputation, loss of professional reputation delayed payment and rework were the main effects of construction disputes in construction projects. Therefore, construction dispute have an effect on most of the project participants which may lead to poor execution, reduced profit margins and budget escalation. Hence Dispute must be resolved as soon as possible to avoid mostly all the effect they have on projects and stakeholders. Furthermore, risk have been identified to be associated with construction dispute, if risk are well managed the occurrence of construction dispute will be reduced.

This study adopted a quantitative approach as the purpose was to investigate the challenges faced... more This study adopted a quantitative approach as the purpose was to investigate the challenges faced by stakeholders in the road construction projects in the Gauteng province of South Africa. This study adopted quantitative research and a well-structured questionnaire was distributed to different construction companies in Gauteng Province, which were registered with various approved councils construction professionals and contractors such as civil engineers, project managers, directors, quantity surveyors, construction managers and resident engineers. The questionnaires were sent via e-mails, some were delivered to the known construction companies by the researcher and some were distributed during site clarification meetings of contractors and consultant's bidders on Gauteng Department Roads and Transport tenders.75 Questionnaires were distributed and 50 came completed and eligible to use. Random sampling method was used to select the respondents in various organizations. Research findings revealed that Community unrest and land proclamation were the highest ranked factors that pose a major challenge in the road construction, time, financial constraints, cash flow, lack of proper panning, resources, delivery of material, plant and equipment, shortage of skilled labourers, lack of equipment, lack of materials, performance guarantees, project duration/period, cost overruns were the major challenges facing the stakeholders in roads construction projects in South Africa. In conclusion, proper planning, communication is vital to overcome the challenges and government at the other hand needs to partner with private companies in terms of transferring skills and upgrading the upcoming contractors by emerging them with sustainable, independent contractors. Therefore, any challenges found in roads construction might be eliminated in the future projects by lesson learned, by planning for the upcoming project properly and also by identifying possibility risk at the early stage of the project.

A positive safety culture requires participation of all stakeholders in construction industry, an... more A positive safety culture requires participation of all stakeholders in construction industry, and is shown through the safety-related knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, behaviour and practices of each worker. Therefore, the study is investigating the hindrances in the implementation of occupational health and safety (OHS) among small medium enterprises (SME'S) in the construction industry in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. A structured questionnaire was distributed to different construction companies and construction workers. From the 70 questionnaires distributed, 42 were brought back and they were all valid and usable. Findings from the survey results obtained from the chosen respondents revealed health safety was known and practiced, however, there are hindrances in the implementation such as poor regular inspections and audits, poor management, poor supervision, lack of material and components, lack of management commitment, equipment and tools, poor communication between workers, poor employers involvement, lack of training and risk education to name a few were the major hindrance in the implementation of occupational health and safety among SME's. Furthermore, if the challenges could be addressed appropriate and effectively result could manifest such as increased productivity; improve quality work; contractors growth and reduced claims; reduced accidents; reduced rework; improved schedule performance. Management and leadership at all levels are therefore encourage to improve construction OH&S in South Africa among SME's. Moreover, occupational health and safety of the workers is not negotiable, is all pervasive, increases productivity, and leads to better performance, improve the company image, reduced claims and accidents also reduce lost times spent on injuries. The concept of OHS implementation must be emphasized by the client and the consulting team by way of having occasional not once off, a major workshop to be held three times in a year, to increase the awareness and the seriousness of the implementation of OHS.

Construction projects involve processes that are complex and dynamic which at most result in disputes between the stakeholders. The study investigated the sources of disputes in construction projects in the Mpumalanga Province. The data used in this paper were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary data was collected via a detailed review of related literature. The primary data was collected through a survey questionnaire which was distributed to project participants. Out of the 90 questionnaires sent out, 80 were received back representing 89% response rate. Data received from the questionnaires were analysed using descriptive statistics procedures such as Ms Excel and SPSS software. Findings from the study revealed that payment delays, poor supervision financial incapable of contractors, change of scope, delay in work progress, poor workmanship, incomplete specification design errors, delay in providing information and extension of time were the main sources of construction disputes. Therefore, client should minimise changing scope to avoid cost overrun and extension of time which contribute to dispute. Respondent believed that dispute avoidance strategies such as stakeholders management, alliancing, lean construction and partnering will reduce dispute drastically. Hence, the industry is encouraged to embrace modern management concepts and to avoid the effects of construction disputes such as loss of production, delays and profitability.

Cost of poor quality (COPQ) in the construction industry is a serious problem that the industry i... more Cost of poor quality (COPQ) in the construction industry is a serious problem that the industry is faced with, due to failure in preventing wastage and defects during construction work. The cost of poor quality remains hidden and eats up to 40% revenues of the construction enterprise. Hence, the study investigated the critical success factors that reduce poor quality in construction projects according to the perceptive of construction professionals in the Swaziland construction industry. This research adopted quantitative research and 50 useable questionnaires were used as an instrument tool for the study. Random sampling method was used to select the respondents in various construction companies. Cost of poor quality impact the construction industry of Swaziland's and construction companies have to reserve funds for such occurrences, since poor quality cannot be tolerated and contractor have to rectify at own cost. Another challenge would be underpricing the construction project and rectifying construction mistake it becomes a big problem for the contractor. Findings revealed that are a lot of success factors that can be used, it's just a matter of the implementation of the success factors in the project. The role of the managers in construction projects is still under looked and therefore, this can be a problem if it is not attained to. The study revealed that are a lot of success factors such as the use of quality management system and the critical success factors can actually help eliminate poor quality in most construction projects of Swaziland. The implementation of quality management systems at the beginning of the project and encouraging team work in the project could assist construction projects.

PPPs are faced with a lot of challenges when it comes to infrastructure delivery in South Africa and across the globe. Hence, the study was conducted to determine the challenges faced by Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the South Africa. The data in this paper was obtained from secondary and primary sources. 90 structured questionnaires were distributed to construction stakeholders in the public and private sectors, who were involved in the PPP's projects in South Africa in the Gauteng province. 80 Questionnaires were brought back and were valid for use.
