It arose from a doctoral supervisory experience on a joint programme for women students, operating between a British and Saudi Arabian University. The research looked at nutritional advice given by diploma-level nurses to pregnant women attending primary health care centres in Saudi Arabia. The supervisor supported research that drew on internationally recognized trends in nursing research (the reflexive learner) whilst attending to local requirements and conventions of the culture. The student was encouraged explicitly to site the research within the framework of Islamic teaching and Saudi culture. The Qur'an was used as an overarching framework within which the tenets of primary health care were explored. This was seen to be crucial in addressing World Health Organisation and the International Council of Nurses' views on contextualizing nursing for the greatest benefit of the population. This was of particular relevance in Saudi Arabia where research carried out in the community by women is novel, and as yet there are no nurse theorists from within Saudi culture.

It can help women select contraceptive methods appropriate to their health needs. The study of contraceptive counseling has not been adequately explored in Saudi Arabia (SA). This study aimed to evaluate whether contraceptive counseling was effective at improving women’s overall knowledge and use of contraceptive methods at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH).Objectives: (1) Assess women’s knowledge of contraceptive methods before and after counseling. (2) Explore which contraceptive methods were used before and after counselingMethods: This study used quantitative, quasi-experimental design. A questionnaire was administered to women who had delivered and been admitted to the postnatal unit at KAUH. The tools used in this study were a pre-test questionnaire, a counseling evaluation sheet, and a post-test questionnaire. Purposive sampling was undertaken. Ethical approval was granted from KAUH. Data collection was conducted for four months. Results: A total of 65 women consented to participate in this study. The mean age of the women was 30.1 (SD = 0.77). The majority of women (78%) had poor knowledge scores about contraception before counseling. The most frequently used contraceptive methods before counseling were lactational amenorrhea (breastfeeding), which was used by 60%, followed by withdrawal and minipill, which were each used by 50.8%. Male condom, combined oral contraceptive (COC) pills, fertility awareness and intrauterine devices (IUDs) were used by 46.2%, 43.1%, 27.7% and 18.5% of women, respectively. After counseling, the mean knowledge score increased significantly, from 49.94 to 86.35 points (p < 0.001). After counseling, the actual methods used by study participants were lactational amenorrhea, IUD, COC, minipill, withdrawal, fertility awareness and male condom. The majority of women (91%) were very satisfied with the counseling provided. Conclusions and recommendations: Contraceptive counseling significantly improves women’s knowledge about and use of birth control methods. As a result, this study recommends sustained efforts to encourage women, their husbands and the community to improve contraceptive knowledge and use. Moreover, healthcare providers, especially nurses, should participate in the education of women.

American Journal of Nursing Science

Clinical training for nursing students is essential in any nursing program because nursing is a d... more Clinical training for nursing students is essential in any nursing program because nursing is a discipline that requires students to apply theoretical knowledge into clinical training setting and acquire various skills to enhance their performance. The study aimed to identify nursing students' opinions on facilitating and hindering factors in the clinical training setting. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. The study was conducted in the Faculty of Nursing King Abdulaziz University on 86 student nurses enrolled in 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th year. The tool was developed by the researchers and consists of two parts: Part I: Demographic characteristics. Part II: This part includes 42 items, 15 items related to facilitating factors and 27 items hindering factors. The study results showed that there was a statistically significant difference among all three academic years of the student nurses regarding common hindering factors named patient's morning care, difficulty in being initiative or not being self-reliant, feeling of not being treated seriously/receiving condescending comments from the supervisor, and insufficient supervision or supervisors irritated or not interested. While no statistically significant difference among all three academic years of the student nurses opinions in relation to the common facilitating factors. Conclusions: The common facilitating factors among all students in the present study were patient family cooperation help me to be more confident, having opportunities to practice different tasks gives confidence, more practice makes learning from mistakes, being receiving feedback gives self-confidence, having a good collaboration with staff gives the confidence to ask questions or show weakness, and working with another student-helped make the work and care of the client go smoothly. Furthermore, the common hindering factors among all students were fear of making mistakes, evaluation by faculty, patient's morning care, lack of time to accomplish the required tasks, difficulty in being initiative or not being self-reliant, receiving condescending comments from the supervisor, and insufficient supervision and supervisors not interested. Recommendations: Develop an organized supervision system, through specialized clinical supervisors, and assigned preceptors from the hospital to help the students in the clinical training. Develop a standardized evaluation form to support and fair evaluation. Prepare the students before direct contact with the patients, through attending simulation training to minimize mistakes when contact with the patients in the clinical setting.

These early NPs utilized the medical model of care to assess, diagnose and treat. Nursing has since grown as a profession, with its own unique and distinguishable, holistic, science-based knowledge, which is complementary within the multidisciplinary team. Today, APNs demonstrate nursing expertise in clinical practice, education, research and leadership, and are no longer perceived as "physician replacements" or assistants. Saudi Arabia has yet to define, legislate or regulate APN. The data showed that the participants' knowledge of breast cancer increased significantly after the workshop. They felt confident to teach and were willing to pass the information of breast cancer and breast selfexamination to their relatives, friends and colleagues.
