At first I would like to introduce G. Iulius Caesar as an author. He was not only a statesman and general, but also an author. His most important literary work are the „Commentarii“, foremost the comments on the Celtic war. He is telling his readers about the conquest of the Celtic country in eight books. The whole work is classified in the years of war and the winter break gives a natural break to the book. It is Caesar’s target to show his readers the whole Celtic country, where the whole war was held. The information about the country also serves to make the war more „alive“ for the readers. It was Caesar’s mission to show an unknown country to the Roman people.
But there is a problem with the source value. Already one of his contemporaries was very critical. Asinius Pollio, a Roman politician, speaker and historian of the 1st century BC was very critical. The critic’s climax in modern times is M. Rambaud’s „L’art de la déformation historique dans les Commentaires de César”. But a complete falsification is probably to exclude. There would have been too many contemporaries, which would have noticed. Besides there were also great successes in the war and also defeats, like in Gergovia 52 BC, are not a secret. But it is still unsure until today, how far Caesar’s propagandistic targets overlie the historic value.
After the introduction about the author and his work, I would like to refer to the different passages relating to the religion of the Celts and Germanic tribes. At first I would like to give a summary of the passages and then I would like to answer following questions: Which information can we get about the religion of the Celts and Germanic tribes? What is the value as a source? What are the opinions of modern research literature?
Finally, I would like to talk about the question of the function of this passages about the Celts and Germanic tribes.
