Title: we won't get used to being goneFandom: Avatar: The Last AirbenderPairing: Mai/Ty Lee (although it's more in the strain of friendship) Rating: PGWarning: Spoilers for The Boiling Rock! Summary: she can't tell if she's still breathing, if sunlight still exists in a room, a world without. Notes: First attempt ever at any kind of femslash! *frets* Also, this was written for the Avatar Request Drabble Meme! going on at my journal. <3 The cell is cold, and she can't tell if she's still breathing, if sunlight still exists in a room, a world without. She traces thin fingers through each curve in the stone, waits and waits and waits. On the fourth day: a hand, calloused, settles in her hair. "Mai," a small voice whispers, and she doesn't know what to say, so she just reaches up, brushes her fingertips along Ty Lee's wrists, and the girl sighs, suddenly at ease.On the ninth day: Ty Lee grips her hand, so hard that she can feel it in her chest, along the low of her back. "I think I'm alone," the girl says to no one in particular, and Mai can't see her face but she thinks the girl is smiling, smiling, as though it is all but a dream. "I dreamt of colors last night," Ty Lee says, almost desperately. "Red, and purple, and -- pink. There's still pink, isn't there?"Mai looks to her. She can barely see the color, tattered, smudged, curving along the girl's hips. She turns away.On the fourteenth day: she has to ask."Why?" There's no need to say more. Ty Lee's eyes sink through all the darkness, threads of gray glimmering, reminding her of hazy sunlight. "She was going to hurt you," Ty Lee says softly, innocently, as though it's obvious. "She went too far -- oh, Mai, she went too far. Weren't we all friends once? How could she ever ---" Her voice trails off, caught up in a dry sob that seems to pierce the air itself. Mai has never heard Ty Lee cry, not once, and it is too much, too soon, too real. She reaches over; smudges her nail across the tear that's sliding down the girl's neck. "My hero," is all she says, dryly, and when Ty Lee falls against her, it is enough. ~ |
