Raised CA 19-9 in diabetes mellitus cases and the effect of hypoglycemic agents on the marker prompted us to compare the effect of metformin and glibenclamide on CA 19-9 levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: It is a randomized control trial (RCT). Normal control (group A1) included 40 staff members from KTH/KMC. A total number of 79 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomized into two groups; group A2 (n=39) who took metformin (500 mg/day) and group A3 (n=40) received glibenclamide (2.5 mg/day). The study was conducted for 6 months and variables including fasting blood glucose, blood lipids, plasma sialic acid, HbA1-c, insulin and C-peptide, CA 19-9, and insulin resistance were measured initially and at week 10. Results: At the endpoint, there were reductions in FBG and HbA1C levels among metformin and glibenclamide groups compared to baseline (p<0.003, p<0.001, and p<0.05, p?0.05 res...

However, the role of HMW ADPN remains to be determined in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Patients and Methods We measured serum HMW ADPN in 49 HD patients (age: 62.4±12.0 years, time on HD: 8.4±6.4 years, male/female=30/19), and examined the association between HMW ADPN and visceral fat area (VFA) estimated by abdominal CT scans. Results Serum HMW ADPN concentrations were weakly and inversely correlated with serum TG (r=-0.271, p=0.0598), but significantly and positively correlated with HDL cholesterol (r=0.392, p=0.0050). Serum HMW ADPN levels were positively correlated with BMI (r=0.472, p=0.0084) in male patients, and the HMW ADPN levels were positively correlated with serum levels of HDL cholesterol (r=0.514, p=0.0243) and TG (r=0.605, p=0.0061).The regression coefficient between VFA and HMW ADPN was-0.491 (p< 0.003). Multiple stepwise regression analyses showed that VFA was the most significant and independent determinant of serum HMW ADPN concentration. Conclusion These findings suggest that HMW ADPN may be inversely associated with visceral fat accumulation in HD patients.

It can be either overt or subclinical. Subclinical hypothyroidism predisposes to overt hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism leads to hypercholesterolaemia because of reduced activity of lipoprotein lipase and thus increases the cardiovascular risk. The objective of this study was carried out to find the lipid profile in hypothyroid patients in asymptomatic previously undiagnosed cases and to correlate different components of lipid profile with TSH and fT 4. Materials and Methods: This is a case control study consisting of 82 hypothyroid patients with age and gender matched controls selected through convenient sampling from Chemical Pathology Department, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi and National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad between May and October 2012. Data were recorded using specially designed pro forma and analysis was carried out on SPSS 17. Results: Among the 82 hypothyroid patients, 62 we...

Obesity also increases the risk of hypertension, coronary artery disease and dyslipidaemia. Objective: Purpose of this study was to find out a relationship between body mass index and total cholesterol levels in 100 hypertensive patients. Materials and Methods: Study was performed in Chemical Pathology Department of Army Medical College, Rawalpindi in collaboration with Department of Medicine, Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi. It is a cross-sectional study and simple non-probability random sampling was used. Hundred hypertensive patients were included in the study. Data was recorded using a detailed proforma and analysis was done on SPSS version 17. Results: Of the 100 hypertensive patients included in the study, there were 39 males while 61 were females. The mean age was 60.1 ± 11.5 years. The mean blood pressure was 171 ± 13.1/105.2 ± 6.6 mm of Hg. Mean body mass index was 28.6 ± 3.97. Mean of total cholesterol was 5.7 ± 0.7 mmol/L in all the patients. Conclusion: Hypertension, dyslipidaemia and increased BMI increase go hand in hand with the risk of cardiovascular disease. Treatment strategies should be adopted to treat hypertension and dyslipidemia aggressively and lifestyle modifications are necessary for reducing BMI.
