Cultural capital in childhood is measured by two concepts: reading cultural capital and artistic cultural capital. The artistic culture scale consists of two items: attending classical music concerts and visiting art museums/exhibits with the family. Reading cultural capital and artistic cultural capital have no effect on men’s success in school, and only weakly affect their status attainment in the labor market. Neither have an effect on entry to elite occupations for men. However, cultural capital has a strong influence on women’s careers. Reading cultural capital and artistic cultural capital increase women’s academic achievement. Artistic cultural capital expands their probability of entry to an elite high school as well as educational attainment. Women’s reading cultural capital affects their occupational success. Moreover, women’s artistic cultural capital is converted to high economic status on the part of their husbands. Women with more artistic cultural capital are more likely to marry men with more economic capital. In Japan, women’s artistic cultural capital equates with status culture, but this is not the case for men. Keywords: cultural capital, educational attainment, occupational attainment, marital selection, reading cultural capital, artistic cultural capital

Abstract: Referring to the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, this study investigates the classifi catory systems underlying the assessment of cultural activities and measures cultural prestige that is constituted from the rating scores when people assess various cultural activities. I clarified how individuals and groups assess cultural activities according to their cultural classifi catory systems. The main fi ndings are as follows: (1) Measuring the prestige scores given to cultural activities, the rank order of assessment of various cultural activities has a high commonality among different social groups. A dominant taxonomy seems to be shared. (2) The degree of cultural distinction, however, differs among social classes. The higher the social status, the stronger the index of cultural distinction. In other words, individuals and groups in higher social classes assess the legitimate culture higher than those in the working class. (3) Social hierarchy corresponds to the soci...
Why does educational success correlate with parents’ socio-economic status and educational level?... more Why does educational success correlate with parents’ socio-economic status and educational level? Family background inequalities are transmitted to children’s educational outcomes through family strategies that are the transmission of cultural capital by parents and their investment in shadow education. In this paper, I investigate the effects of cultural capital acquired during childhood and experiences of shadow education on educational attainment and academic performance for the past half century, using data from the 1995 SSM survey in Japan. I created indexes of embodied cultural capital, objectifi ed cultural capital, and shadow education. The index of embodied cultural capital during childhood is measured by the experiences of fi ne art culture and reading culture with the family. Fine art culture consists of two items: participation in classical music and visit to art museums/art galleries with the family in childhood. Reading culture is measured by the experience in which a ...
