There have been numerous attempts to categorize and evaluate "push" and "pull" factors for urbanization. Push factors (pushing individuals, families, and communities out of rural and regional centers) would be, for instance, lack of employment, poor social, educational, health, and cultural facilities, and diminished opportunities to find life partners, whereas urban pull factors include job opportunities, (religious) freedom, and new chances for community development and courtship.

Although the author may have had his reasons for stressing the importance of marriage, the emphasis should have been placed on the more appropriate concepts of emotional health and meaningful relationships, rather than on the societal institution of marriage. Current developments in western societies towards increased individualism and the subsequent breaking loose ...

This is not least due to the complex nature of MUS and mimicry of morbidity with conditions that have common clinical assessment and treatment modalities, e.g. migraine headaches which stress headaches commonly are misdiagnosed as. Effective treatment modalities for MUS have been more or less nonexistent. In the following we present a modality for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of MUS that in our experience leads to cure, at least in better than half of these cases measured in terms of allowing the individual back to work. These results are at least twice as high as those described hitherto (see below), and yet, our treatment modality is beset with many obstacles, not the least of which is the intransigence of a system that will not and/or can not understand why this modality is so much better than what they are able to offer. The most important obstacle is financing, as this modality requires long term and committed financing to work. The economic implications of not dealing with these issues are described.

In looking at the effects of policy on health we therefore have to specify ...

This article investigates whether the factors which the Dutch press portray as determining or allowing for health are congruent with the central tenets of health promotion as these are detailed in the WHO's 1986 Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and 1997 Jakarta Declaration. A content analysis was conducted on 600 randomly selected health-related articles appearing in the five Dutch newspapers with the largest average daily circulation over 8 weeks. Two coders ascribed values to each of the 600 articles for seven content variables, including determinant theme of article, authority identifying determinant theme, means and agent of determinant conditioning, breadth of population affected, and mediating populational attributes. Two form variables, text and graphic area, were also assessed by the coders. Findings indicate that though there are some reasons to be encouraged, representations of the determinants of health in the Dutch press are largely incompatible with the etiological assumptions of health promotion. Health promoters, it is asserted, must continue to engage the press in order to take advantage of opportunities and gaps in health etiological coverage.
