Research paper thumbnail of Using Evidence-Based Design to Improve Pharmacy Department Efficiency

This article compares three designs, the current design, an anecdotal design, and an evidence-based design, to identify how evidence-based design can improve efficiency and staff well-being by reducing walking time and distance. Data were collected from the existing building and used to measure the efficiency of the department in its current state. These data were then mapped onto an anecdotal design, produced by architects from interviews and workshops with the end users, and an evidence-based design, produced by highlighting functions with high adjacencies. This changed the view on the working processes within the department, shifting away from a focus on the existing robotic dispensing system. Using evidence-based design was found to decrease the walking time and distance for staf...

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Engineering Sustainability, 2005

Urban areas are recognised as having a major influence in the drive towards making development mo... more Urban areas are recognised as having a major influence in the drive towards making development more sustainable. Consequently, robust and comprehensive methodologies for the assessment of sustainability in the urban context are essential for urban decision makers such as planners, architects, engineers and managers. This paper describes the method and main findings of a scoping study undertaken by the ‘Metrics, Models and Toolkits for Whole Life Sustainable Urban Development’ consortium of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's Sustainable Environment Programme in the UK (Sue-MoT) to determine gaps and needs in current urban sustainability assessment tools. The paper also introduces a main programme of research which will address key priorities identified. During the study, 675 tools applicable to the assessment of sustainability in regard to urban developments were identified with 165 of these undergoing evaluations against a series of criteria identified as i...

Research paper thumbnail of Therapeutic lighting design for the elderly: a review

Perspectives in Public Health, 2011

This review aims to document what is known of the physical and psychological aspects of lighting and their role in promoting a healthy and safe environment for the elderly. Methods: A methodical review was carried out of published literature on the physical and psychological impacts of light on the elderly. Design standards and guides from professional organizations were evaluated to identify synergies and gaps between the evidence base and current practice. Results: Lighting has been identified as a significant environmental attribute responsible for promoting physical and mental health of the elderly. The evidence related to visual performance was found to be robust. However, guides and standards appeared to have focused mostly on illumination requirements for specific tasks and have lacked detailed guidelines ...

Research paper thumbnail of Attaining improved resilience to floods: a proactive multi‐stakeholder approach

Disaster Prevention and Management: An International Journal, 2009

This paper seeks to focus on the mitigation for flood hazards in the UK; particularly in understanding the extent of the problem, collating key guidance and legislation related to flood hazard mitigation, identifying who the key construction decision makers are and the most opportune stages of the Design‐Construction‐Operation Process when they need to make their key decisions.Design/methodology/approachA pluralistic research design was adopted for the study, which included a UK‐wide questionnaire survey and a set of semi‐structured interviews involving a range of professionals from construction, planning, insurance, emergency management and local/national government agencies was undertaken.FindingsDespite the publication of a range of guidance on flood hazard mitigation in the UK there is still insufficient evidence that key construction stakeholders are p...

Strategic planning is a key management function which provides future direction and helps determi... more Strategic planning is a key management function which provides future direction and helps determine the competitiveness of companies. Evidence suggests that construction companies put less emphasis in exercising this function than their counterparts in other sectors. In order to understand current practice, a questionnaire survey and a workshop of senior managers in the UK construction sector was conducted, the results of which are reported here. This provides a platform for a proposed process framework for enhancing ...

Evidence from a recent industry workshop of senior construction managers has shown that the majority have been involved in the formulation of long-term strategic planning and decision making, but in an informal, unstructured and ad-hoc manner using ...

In the last decade, there have been a range of futures studies published by individuals and organisations within the construction sector and wider afield. Despite this, little has been done on synthesising and classifying the emerging issues and analysing the substantive content of these studies. A thorough search of futures study reports in construction has been conducted from which key reports were ...

The argument for daylighting has changed in different era, from the one and only source of light to energy efficient source, from healthy source of light to, again unique source of light to stop generation of fossil fuel GHG-emitting energy. The vast campaign for daylight building was ...

The position of luminaires can impact on all of these criteria as well as influence energy consumption of the lighting system, therefore, it is necessary to optimise luminaire position ...

However, a window impacts on several environmental attributes of the indoor space. Depending on the size, orientation and solar shading configuration, a window influences on visual and thermal comfort, as well as on the energy consumption of the building. It is thus necessary to optimise window design for maximum performance. Computer modelling and simulation techniques integrated with ...

Under such conditions the latitude of the site and its regional climatic conditions, such as ambient outdoor daylight levels and sunshine probability are found to have diminished direct impacts on the interior daylight potential. Government strategies on sustainable development, published in 1999 and 2005, are thought to be driving the development of new legislations that are aimed at delivering a sustainable future for the UK. As a result, conventional stand-alone approaches to decision making in strategic planning are being replaced by more participatory and evidence-based approaches. These focus on ...
