This workshop paper considers the solution requirements to meet future manufacturing needs from an embedded intelligence perspective, anticipating the need to find solutions that are configurable to meet the multiple differing knowledge requirements across the range of manufacturing business types as well as being flexible enough not to constrain businesses against their necessary change requirements.

Using real-time applications for provision of instantaneous and dependable communications, media streaming, and device control in these scenarios is a growing research field. Realising timing requirements in packet delivery is essential to safety-critical real-time applications that are both delay- and loss-sensitive. Safety of these applications is compromised by packet loss, both on the network and by the applications themselves that will drop packets exceeding delay bounds. However, the provision of this required Quality of Service (QoS) must overcome issues relating to the lack of reliable existing infrastructure, conservation of safety-certified functionality. It must also overcome issues relating to the layer-2 dynamics with causal factors including hidden transmitters and fading channels. This thesis proposes that bo...

Real-time asset tracking in indoor mass production manufacturing environments can reduce losses a... more Real-time asset tracking in indoor mass production manufacturing environments can reduce losses associated with pausing a production line to locate an asset. Complemented by monitored contextual information, e.g. machine power usage, it can provide smart information, such as which components have been machined by a worn or damaged tool. Although sensor based Internet of Things (IoT) positioning has been developed, there are still key challenges when benchmarked approaches concentrate on precision, using computationally expensive filtering and iterative statistical or heuristic algorithms, as a trade-off for timeliness and scalability. Precise but high-cost hardware systems and invasive infrastructures of wired devices also pose implementation issues in the Industrial IoT (IIoT). Wireless, self-powered sensors are integrated in this paper, using a novel, communication-economical RSSI/ToF ranging method in a proposed semantic IIoT architecture. Annotated data collection ensures accessibility, scalable knowledge discovery and flexibility to changes in consumer and business requirements. Deployed at a working indoor industrial facility the system demonstrated comparable RMS ranging accuracy (ToF 6m and RSSI 5.1m with 40m range) to existing systems tested in non-industrial environments and a 12.6-13.8m mean positioning accuracy.

The resale market itself changes with the influx of new products, as well as hardware and software discontinuations. Competitive business decision making is often performed by a human operator and may not be timely or fully informed. These are decisions such as whether to perform a high cost repair or recycle a product or whether to use a batch of parts in repair or sell them on can be used to optimise product life-cycle management (PLM) and profit margins. A real-time decision making capability can reduce the risk of performing non-profitable processing. The novel contribution of this work is an interoperable semantic decision support toolset that is necessary to enable a capability for timely EoL decisions based on complete knowledge on profitability, predicted pricing and cost-of-production. Many decision support systems have been proposed for the EoL domain, but a lack of interoperability and use of unstructured knowledge bases has led to decisions based on knowledge that is not up to date. Using formalised, semantic technologies offers sustainable decision making in this volatile and increasingly competitive domain.

Energy waste significantly contributes to increased costs in the automotive manufacturing industr... more Energy waste significantly contributes to increased costs in the automotive manufacturing industry, which is subject to energy usage restrictions and taxation from national and international policy makers and restrictions and charges from national energy providers. For example, the UK Climate Change Levy, charged to businesses at 0.554 p/kWh equates to 7.28% of a manufacturing business’s energy bill based on an average total usage rate of 7.61 p/kWh. Internet of Things (IoT) energy monitoring systems are being developed, however, there has been limited consideration of services for efficient energy-use and minimisation of production costs in industry. This paper presents the design, development and validation of a novel, adaptive Cyber-Physical Toolset to optimise cumulative plant energy consumption through characterisation and prediction of the active and reactive power of three-phase industrial machine processes. Extensive validation has been conducted in automotive manufacture production lines with industrial three-phase Hurco VM1 computer numerical control (CNC) machines.

These streams are characterised by critical timing and throughput requirements and low packet loss tolerance levels. Many Cross Layer approaches exist either for provision of QoS to soft real-time streams in static wireless networks or to improve the performance of real and non-real-time transmissions in MANETs. The common ground and lessons learned from these approaches, with a view to the potential provision of much needed support to real-time applications in MANETs, is therefore discussed.

Provision of instantaneous, mobile and dependable communications in military and safety-critical ... more Provision of instantaneous, mobile and dependable communications in military and safety-critical scenarios must overcome certain wireless network issues: lack of reliable existing infrastructure, immutability of mission-critical protocols and detrimental wireless dynamics with contributing factors including hidden transmitters and fading channels. Benchmarked approaches do not fully meet these challenges, due to reliance on addressing Quality of Service (QoS) at a layer-specific level rather than taking a system of systems approach. This paper presents an adaptive middleware methodology to provide timely MANET communications through predictive selection and dynamic contention reduction, without invasive protocol modification. This is done using ROAM, the proposed, novel Real-time Optimised Ad hoc Middleware based architecture. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the adaptability and scalability of the architecture as well as capability to bound maximum delay, jitter and packet loss in complex and dynamic MANETs.
