Infancy, which encompasses only a small fraction of the average person's expected life span, ... more Infancy, which encompasses only a small fraction of the average person's expected life span, is a period characterized by astonishing biological, psychological, and social changes. This article first briefly overviews the history of theory and research in infancy and then discusses whether infancy is a ‘stage’ of life. Challenges infants pose to their study are next reviewed. Although infants pose special challenges to research, human infancy has been studied as a platform for hypothesis and theory testing; as a major period of physiological and psychological adjustment; as a time of socialization; for infants' effects on adults; as a basis of phylogenetic and ontogenetic comparison; and as a setting point for the balance of the life course. This article presents a catalog of multiple types of infancy studies and concludes with a consideration of the general significance of human infancy.
