As such a comprehensive review of coursebooks has never appeared in the ELT Journal before, we have endeavoured to make our review as rigorous as possible, in order to be informative about the

Innovative language teaching and learning at university: a look at new trends

Depending on the individual learners, learning and teaching contexts and modes of delivery, teaching materials and approaches will be different. When we conduct a systematic evaluation of available commercial materials, regardless of their trendy disguises, they tend to be reincarnated clones of popular coursebooks based on traditional syllabuses that assume faceto-face classroom delivery. These materials may come with additional digital materials but they seem to focus on the mechanical aspects of language (e.g. quizzes of discrete item knowledge). How can we ensure the quality and effectiveness of our provision as well as satisfy the diverse learner needs and wants when using different modes of delivery? Whatever approaches we decide to take, the answer paradoxically emerges from our wisdom and efforts in the adaptation and development of materials based on fundamental and universal learning principles that reflect current understanding in second language acquisition.

It explains and evaluates these theories, and focuses on recent research that has enriched thinking about the best ways to facilitate communicative effectiveness in an L2. It then suggests practical applications regarding language planning, curriculum development, pedagogy, materials development, teacher development, and assessment, establishing a tangible connection between theory and practice. Unlike many SLA books which are narrowly focused on the acquisition of language, it explores the roles of factors such as pragmatics, para-linguistic signals, gesture, semiotics, multi-modality, embodied language, and brain activity in L2 communication. SLA Applied connects research-based theories to the authors' and students' real-life experiences in the classroom, and stimulates reflection and creativity through the inclusion of Readers' Tasks in every chapter. This engaging and relevant text is suitable for students in Applied Linguistics or TESOL courses, trainee teachers, researchers, and practitioners.

In this chapter, I would like to explore implications of brain studies to theories and practice in second language acquisition and materials development for language learning. When a child alerts a mother, ‘My tummy hurts’, the problem is likely to lie somewhere, academically put, in the architecture and the processes that constitute the phenomena of ‘digestion’. Medical advancement now enables the specialists to directly observe, analyse and measure:

The four main drivers of that change include a shift in emphasis from materials for language teaching to language learning; evidenced-based development; the huge increase in digital delivery technologies; and the wedding of materials developed for the learning of English with those for other second or foreign languages.

It is designed to help learners acquire the basic ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Japanese required to express themselves and about their surroundings; to raise motivation for further learning of Japanese, and to develop awareness of the major characteristics of the language. The book consists of 18 units of classroom materials(text and worksheets). It also has a reference section containing grammar descriptions and useful expressions.
