Colonel Scott O'Connor from Kabuki: Quantum Fighter

Part 2/24 of my NES Hidden Gems project.

"I'd like to return to my body now." - Col. Scott O'Connor, Kabuki: Quantum Fighter

Yeah, the REAL part 2 this time |D
For the second entry we have Kabuki: Quantum Fighter.
It's kinda surprising this game got so obscure, I mean, it's made by HAL Laboratory which is only the same company that made Kirby, one of the more well-known Nintendo icons, heh, you'd think a game from such a company would at least be known...
The only real "problem" was the typical NESish cheesy story. I should mention by the way, that this obviously oriental kabuki dancer waving his hair around is actually a US army colonel by the name Scott O'Connor. You see, Earth has been invaded by aliens (Dun Dun DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!), or more specifically, an alien computer virus that has infected earth's nuclear weapon systems. When all appears to be lost, American scientist come up with a solution, which is to use an experimental device that can send a person's personality into a computer and form an avatar for it to fight of the evil aliens. How exactly Col. O'Connor got turned into a Japanese kabuki dancer is never explained nor even addressed throughout the game... well, whatever, we have seen stranger stuff, haven't we |D

Other than that, it might be yet another action game akin to Ninja Gaiden or Batman, but it's a bloody GOOD action game based on that playstyle. The graphics might be simple, but still good as far as NES goes, the music was actually one of the best on the system, and the gameplay was pretty smooth, the controls are tight and responsive, even the challenge is completely fair, neither frustrating nor easy, the game is just "challenging". That, and it's strangely amusing to kill your enemies by headbanging XD OK, technically he's swinging his apparently lethal hair, but it's still an amusing thought XD

Heh, a shame this game never got the attention it deserved, especially considering their famous creators, not even a SSB entry, which would work pretty well if you think about it. But hopefully new retro enthusiasts will keep finding it and enjoying it.
