The Marine Mammal Training Community (original) (raw)

Hello everybody!! This community is perfect!! I'm so looking forward to meeting whoever still lurks about here! Thanks AnnLo for approving me!Well, about me. My name is Alyssa and it is my goal in life to work for Sea World as a trainer, preferably with cetaceans. My ultimate dream would be to work with the killer whales. I was lucky enough to intern at Miami Seaqurium in the Animal Care dept, and this coming Spring I've applied to their training internship, and one at Epcot in Disney World as well. I'm hoping to get one of them, and later transfer to UCF in Orlando so I can be closer to Sea World and maybe meet some trainers and ask some questions. I've worked with horses for about 7 years now, and I'm working on anything and everything to try to make myself stand out because I've heard the competition is extreme for a training position. Anyway, it's great to be on here with people who share the same passion. Comments are welcome! Feel free to friend me as well if you'd like! :]

hoping this community is not dead o.oHrmm, about me... Been interested in marine mammals all my life, Got the chance to spend a few weeks with some bottlenose phins at a friends park and get the feel for the job. Since then Ive Been working with marine mammal rescue and interning as a Sealion/Seal trainer. I hope to work with Cetaceans again in the future, however there is no facilities in the New York Tri-state area who house them. Looking to head to school soon and work towards a degree in animal phsycology and possibly veterinary medicine, Ive not really figured out exactly what id like to do... Still looking around to see what my options are. Hope to see some more discussion in the group sometime soon!

i am really glad that i just found this community... i have always known that i wanted to work either in conservation or directly with animals, and i have always had a strong pull towards marine work. Through my college, i signed up for a trip to Maui to study and track Humpback whales (amazing...) for two weeks. it includes all of the tedious stuff but also all of the wonderful photography and hands on experiences. I am so excited. In case anyone is interested (they also have a dolphin program) i am going through the Dolphin Institute in Hawaii, which im sure most of you are familiar with... or if any of you have been there let me know what you thought : p Anyway, i just got back from Marineland, which i wasn't entirely thrilled with but i did get to feed/touch an Orca which was AMAZING... i got great pictures... and just watching the trainers with the animals really made my desire to work with marine mammals alot stronger. The problem for me now is... I live in New York State, smack in the middle. There is not really anywhere to go to study this field or get internships. I work at our local zoo, but its very small and basic. I would love to hear people's experiences with internships and schools for this, and how the job of marine mammal trainer is. I have talked with some in the past but not for long so i would love it if you gujys could help me out! thanks so much

I need opinions. There's this navy internship program here where i live. It's 16 weeks & you have to give 30 [i think] + hours ever week. You get dolphin & sea lion behavior & training experience. I brought this up to my parents because i thought this would be great experience but they don't agree with what the navy's doing to their animals. They believe it's imoral & honestly, i can completely understand. What do you guys think?

Hey all. Many of you may already know me. I've viewed this new community, and we shouldn't just neglect to write in it. This is our dreams and hopes! So let me start off by asking everyone: How did you want to become a Animal Trainer?I began to want to become an animal trainer when I was vacationing with family in Orlando. We went to SeaWorld, and fell in love with the Shamu show. Through the years, I've learned more about the position of animal training. I've been Interaction programs that broaden my knowledge, and the memories I've shared with all the animals at SeaWorld, I wouldn't give up for anything else. This is my dream, and I'm not going to let anything get in the way of it!

I have some new pics though, so if you wanna see them, Comment and lemme know.
