This study will elaborate on the role of local partnerships to understand to what extent they contribute to a sustainable environment for local socio-economic and private sector development. In addition, it will assess the critical success factors of business community partnerships. The study analyses nine tourism conservation partnerships in one country, Tanzania. Certainly, there is a risk of generalizing from a few case studies in one particular sector. Tanzania, however, is a good place to embark on an investigation on tourism conservation partnerships. Conservation aspects and commercial efforts in the area of tourism are of importance and do relate to each other. Without the conservation of wildlife and the existing ecosystem, there will be less nature based tourism. Purpose This article explores the potential of an emerging group of farmers in Kenya, namely the ... more Purpose This article explores the potential of an emerging group of farmers in Kenya, namely the growing segment of urban-based medium-size farmers, often called “telephone farmers”. To what extent do they benefit from an emerging ecosystem to support them in operating their farms, and what does that mean for the Hidden middle of agricultural value chains, the actors between the farmers and consumers? Unlocking the potential production of telephone farmers will require more services from collectors, traders, transport firms, the storage facilities, wholesalers and processing units and retailers. Ultimately, optimized telephone farm production benefits the business of Hidden middle value chain actors, increases incomes and jobs and improves food security. Design/methodology/approach Based on a survey and in-depth interviews a profile of the telephone farmers is given and their role as innovators is analyzed. Research paper thumbnail of Can sustainable-tourism achieve conservations and local economic development? The experience with nine business – community wildlife-tourism agreements in Northern Tanzania

This paper reports the results of an investigation between conservation and local economic develo... more This paper reports the results of an investigation between conservation and local economic development. Focusing on Tanzania nine tourism-wildlife business community agreements are analyzed, including three NGO-initiated agreements, three business-initiated agreements and three government-initiated agreements. The analysis of the agreements aims at the assessment of their effects on Local Economic Development and Conservation. The following major outcomes of the analysis could be noted: NGOinitiated agreements on the whole contribute most positively to conservation while business-initiated agreements contribute most positively to local economic development. Most importantly it provides insights on how business community agreements can provide for both Local Ecnomic Development and Conservation. The research, finally, provides lessons for a better focused and more effective communitybased natural resources management policy.

Purpose The inclusiveness of smallholder cocoa farmers in the international cocoa value chain is ... more Purpose The inclusiveness of smallholder cocoa farmers in the international cocoa value chain is addressed in the context of institutional voids through linkages with different business models in the region of Bali, West-Sumatra and West-Sulawesi. Being the third highest producer of cocoa, local farmers have a high dependency on cocoa cultivation; however, they lack policies that foster and reward sustainable high-quality cocoa according to international standards. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach An explanatory multiple-case study design assessed the relevance of partnerships in contributing to sustainable local development and inclusiveness for smallholder farmers.
