Hello, this is a general reminder that renames or vanish requests should be reserved for someone who knows the language and local wiki affairs on their home wiki or most active wiki for the first 24 hours after the request is placed.
For the first 24 hours after a rename or vanishing request has been placed, it should only be processed by a renamer who has sufficient proficiency in the language of the requester's home or most active wiki, and is active on that wiki.

What kind of work is being done at the other language projects to wind them down prior to going read-only? Thanks. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 01:07, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Michael.C.Wright I don't know about anything others are doing. What I am doing is to replace uses of DPL with raw wikitext to avoid them looking bad once we undeploy the extension. For example, see n:es:Special:Contributions/Dexbot. Amir (talk) 13:28, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have proposed that Dexbot be unblocked at en.WN: n:Wikinews:Water cooler/proposals#Proposal to unblock bot for final DPL cleanup. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 16:24, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Leaderboard has already unblocked Dexbot at en.WN.[1] Can you evaluate n:Wikinews:Archives and let me know what you need from me prior to running the bot to replace DPL with static lists on n:Wikinews:Archives, it's sub-pages, linked pages, etc?As mentioned on the proposal, please avoid the following pages, which I will do manually:
I'll make myself available to reduce protection as-needed. You previously mentioned something about not needing flood or admin. I don't understand how that technically works, but we do have two local buearucrats that may be able to help with that if necessary. If you need me to make any requests of them, let me know or you are welcome to as well. Thanks in advance for your help! Michael.C.Wright (talk) 16:39, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi. On it.wikinews we have some problems with "staticization" of DPL.
- 🟡️(not critical) Wrong bullet list (fixed manually in homepage, but I don't know in other places)
- 🔴️(critical) nidification of DPL in templates don't work well: our Portals becomes empty (eg.) because they use a parametric Template to call DPL, and the bot delete DPL from the template
I've tested a workaround moving raw code from the Template to a Portal with some changes to de-parametrize, but it's manual and bot must rerun on modified Portal. I hope this (especially 2° point) can be fixed in some fully-automatic way. Tks a lot --Infosfera (talk) 08:18, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Ladsgroup, we see the same bullet list editing problem on fr.wikinews, for instance : on this article. Nivopol (talk) 13:24, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Please pause use on en.WN until this is sorted out. Thank you. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 13:32, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I just checked n:Australia/2004 and n:Australia/2005 and the lists look accurate, just not consistently formatted with bulleted lists. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 13:39, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've corrected bulletized all the Australia/year pages except n:Australia/2009. On that page, all the links are enclosed in <nowiki>. I'm not sure if that is a step in the bot's process, so I haven't touched that page. Let me know how I can help. Thanks. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 14:02, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infosfera, @Michael.C.Wright and @Nivopol: I actually fixed the bug for bullet point before running on English (with the exception of only one link, I can fix that separately). It is stopped now and I will do a check and revert anything that it has made a mistake. I'll also fix all of the bullet point mistakes in other languages. Amir (talk) 16:53, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks Amir. What about the problem 2 (DPL nidified in template)? Can we do something on pages/code/template to help the bot to work well, before the 4 May dead(death!)line? -- Infosfera (talk) 19:08, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
My plan for now is to check and revert anything on template namespace. On how to fix those. I'd say we have to do it manually I think, you could theoretically use Special:ExpandTemplates and then parse the results and then translate it back from HTML to wikitext but it's going to be basically impossible to do automatically. Do you have a sense of how many pages need updating in your wiki? Amir (talk) 22:38, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Progress update: Checked and reverted anything bad in Italian Wikinews (editing on template, the critical problem). I will check other wikis too. Also wrote a script to fix the mistakes of the bullet list. It's running and fixing stuff (example) Amir (talk) 23:11, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Once you get it all buttoned-down and are comfortable with it, feel free to resume at en.WN. And thanks again for sticking with it! Michael.C.Wright (talk) 00:36, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Amir "how many pages need updating" for DPL in templates, in it.wn AFAIK Portals are built using templates containing DPL.
Portals are about arguments and nations.
So, I've searched inclusion of templates containing DPL, ant the result is:
- 15 for template {argomento} (main arguments are listed here) and I think this is a high priority because this is in use in portals linked in main page.
- ~240 for template {stato} (news about counties of the world, eg. of portal) medium priority but it will be good to fix.
- 106 for template {persona} (news about peoples): the template with DPL is in use in categories about people to generate an infobox and a list of news ordered by date, but:
- for some reason older news are all at date 17 feb 2025 (eg) (this is a problem of entire it.wn for reasons unknow to me)
- the list is a duplication of the autogenerated by the category itself (unordered, but news seem the same)
- a lot of this categories contains very few pages
So for this reasons I think to fix template {persone} is a low priority.
About the date of 17 feb 2025 associated to a lot of pages by DPL, perhaps is out-of-your-scope, but it will be great to fix also this when "staticizing" DPL lists: for my scopes, some time ago I've added a specific CSS ID "data-articolo" to the date in each article page, so a bot can easily retrieve the info from each article to fix the problem when detect wrong "17 feb 2025" (only trim-out the first word, the day-of-week).
I don't have advanced permission on it.wn, but if I can do some "stupid&easy" stuff before the deadline, ask me. -- Infosfera (talk) 08:26, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infosfera For the portals, I suggest using Special:ExpandTemplates to deprecate using the n:it:Template:Argomento altogether. Near the closure date, we can update the pages then. Does that make sense? Regarding the "17 Feb 2025" issue, I noticed it in other wikinews wikis too but I'm honestly too swamped to investigate and fix it. Sorry. Amir (talk) 14:27, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much for the work you've done at en.WN.I believe the only critical pages left with DPL are n:Wikinews:Archives. User pages are not a concern and the remaining pages in Main namespace will be done manually by me, by this Thursday. If you can focus your next round at en.WN on n:Wikinews:Archives, I think we'll be good-to-go. Thanks again! Michael.C.Wright (talk) 14:42, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Amir, ok, I will go to "expand" the Portals to "prepare the terrain" for the bot. tks.
For the date, I will try to ask if somebody at it.wiki can do the fix: if yes, I will ask you to run the DPL remover before. See you. --Infosfera (talk) 19:18, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Michael.C.Wright Those pages all are protected. We could give my bot admin rights until May 4th so it can edit those pages. Amir (talk) 19:19, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure we're looking at the same thing. The page n:Wikinews:Archives is only protected to auto-confirmed. Sub-pages such as n:Wikinews:Archives/Date/2011 don't appear to be protected at all (I've just checked several at random). The bot has already done some, such as n:Wikinews:2011/February/14 Michael.C.Wright (talk) 01:08, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Michael.C.Wright The DPL doesn't exist on n:Wikinews:Archives nor on n:Wikinews:Archives/Date/2011, it is on the subpages such as n:Wikinews:2011/April/18 which is already done by the bot or n:Wikinews:2006/August/26 that are protected. Amir (talk) 12:11, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I started the script under my own account that has GIE so it can bypass protection Amir (talk) 14:57, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
┌─────────────┘
I was wondering how you were editing protected pages. Thanks. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 17:07, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Amir. Can you please re-run the bot on this? Also the Portals (Cultura e società | Curiosità | Disastri e incidenti | Economia e finanza | Giustizia e criminalità | Meteo | Necrologi | Politica e conflitti | Trasporti | Scienza e tecnologia | Sport) are template-expanded and ready for the bot.
Is the bot script available somewhere so that I can run it on individual pages if needed?
Tks! -- Infosfera (talk) 15:53, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infosfera: I ran the bot and it updated some pages under my username but these pages didn't get updated since they have {{PAGENAME}}. If you replace them, the bot can run it. I'll try to put the script somewhere soon so you can run it too. Amir (talk) 16:03, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
phab:P92102. It's quite hacky and crappy but it's a one-off thing so meh. Amir (talk) 16:10, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I willl look if I'm able to run py on wiki...!

Oops, I've forget this Portal! -- Infosfera (talk) 18:35, 30 April 2026 (UTC) Done manually with js help. --Infosfera (talk) 14:12, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, do you know the exact time of shutdown? It's "4 may" but this mean 4 may 0:00 UTC+0, 4 may 23:59 UTC+0, 3 may 23:59 UTC+0, or something different? Or is it a surprise? --Infosfera (talk) 13:34, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infosfera it'll be around afternoon or evening UTC time, since people are traveling after Wikimedia Hackathon. It'll also be done gradually so it'll take a while. I can try to make itwikinews be the last to give you more time. Amir (talk) 13:37, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ok, tks. @Mess, a sysop from it.wiki, is trying to fix the 250 country portals problem (expanding templates), but I don't know if he can also staticize DPL using your py code. If not, we need a last pass of your Dexbot before close. On my side, the question was only because I just wanted to post a "closing article", but I will do tomorrow morning UTC+1 or this evening, so for me don't worry about more time! -- Infosfera (talk) 13:56, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Several pages on en.WN use {{#tag:dynamicpagelist}} to construct DPLs. For example: n:Template:DateDPL. I know this is last-minute, but do you have time to run through en.WN for that construction as well? Thanks in advance. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 14:29, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Amir. I confirm that we can "expand" templates with DPL, but a last run of your Dexbot to staticize DPL's lists is required for Portals. I hope you can do it tomorrow. Thank you very much! -- Infosfera (talk) 18:48, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Running it now. Amir (talk) 09:29, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Stopped after 127 edits... some throttling happens due to non-bot-flagged user? -- Infosfera (talk) 10:42, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infosfera Nope. Just spotty connection in (Italian) train :D I will get to finish it before making the wiki read only (and it's not a 100% read-only, global interface admins like myself and stewards can still edit it) Amir (talk) 11:37, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I apologize! :D May I ask to check before freezing that the article about WN shutdown stay on top as in other language editions like en.wn? Somebody insist on put his articles about tennis and soccer as last ones, but it doesn't seem like a good idea in terms of image, "history" of the project and a good "business card" for posterity. Tks! -- Infosfera (talk) 13:57, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Noted. Amir (talk) 14:09, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Last night, since it wasn't closed yet, I still managed to fix the date issues on Portals that DPL had for some reason (eg.), using in semi-manual mode a botched js that did its job, though. Thank you for everything!!! 🙏️-- Infosfera (talk) 16:57, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infosfera Thank you for the clean up. I will close the wiki now. Amir (talk) 18:37, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
https://it.wikinews.org/wiki/Portale:Unione_Europea and https://it.wikinews.org/wiki/Portale:Mondo are escaped to my cleanup, but... oh well! -- Infosfera (talk) 18:54, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Infosfera I think I fixed Portal:Mondo. The other one didn't need fixing (or my bot did it?). The wiki is still open for a couple more hours Amir (talk) 22:22, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
The problem is the wrong "17 feb 2025": the date-fixed code is:

Hello, I noticed your bot's work removing the DPL. Recently, Wikinews in Portuguese started using DPL as a template on date pages. For example, on the page for May 2026. That is, the bot should add a "subst:" to the "Efemérides" template, and then transform the DPL into plain text. Edu! (talk) 20:16, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Edu! Thanks. I will run the pywikibot script to subst it first Amir (talk) 20:42, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and thank you for your work. I am Nanona15dobato, an administrator of Japanese Wikinews.
I appreciate your efforts on the DPL replacement task. As far as I am aware, replacements within this project have already been completed, and the remaining instances appear to be only those enclosed in nowiki tags on help pages and discussion pages. Therefore, I would kindly ask you to refrain from further edits.
I have reverted your changes for the time being; however, if my understanding is incorrect, I apologize for the inconvenience and would appreciate your clarification.
I apologize for any awkwardness in my English, as this message has been translated. nanona(15) 16:13, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
