Velvet Crowe (ベルベット・クラウ)
Velvet Crowe is born in the village of Aball in Eastgand. She loses both her parents very early in life, leaving her older sister Celica to look after her and her brother Laphicet. In the dangerous world they live in, she loses her older sister too. Their sister's husband looks after them from that day onwards. Even with all the loss and pain Velvet manages to grow up to be a cheerful and strong teenager who cares very much for her family.
That changes however, when their uncle, Artorius, uses her brother Laphicet as a sacrifice for reviving a forgotten god. Witnessing her brother stabbed and killed by someone she thought of as a mentor and looked up to, someone she called family, she is consumed by rage and turns into a daemon, gains her iconic demonic claw and gains the ability to consume other daemons. She is defeated by Artorius and taken prisoner, while Artorius gets away with the murder of her brother.
Thrown into a prison tower, into the lowest level with little to no light, Velvet is forced to fight and consume other daemons for the next three years of her life. Her hatred consumes her and after three years, she becomes only a shell of her former self. When she finds the oppotunity to escape, she takes it and sets on a journey to exact revenge on Artorius.
In her travels, she causes many atrocities in order to get to Artorius, burning medicine, killing people, destroying cities, whatever got in between her and her revenge. People starts hearing about her deeds and starts calling her the "Lord of Calamity". Thus Velvet Crowe becomes the first Lord of Calamity.
A lot is revealed to Velvet in her travels, about the world, about daemons and daemonblight, about her brother's sacrifice, and she is thrown into despair over and over again. With the help of her party members and a malakhim she names after her brother due to similarities between appearances and personalities, she manages to shake off the despair, and begins to somehow resemble her older self.
After many hardships, Velvet manages to bring down Artorius, and sacrifices herself to seal the evil god that was revived using her brother as a sacrifice, saving the world and allowing the reign of free will and human emotion. Starting up a normal country girl, Velvet becomes the villain of the story, then becomes the revenge driven antihero that ends up saving the world.
Velvet is the original Lord of Calamity that killed the first shepherd. The malak boy she freed and named, Laphicet, develops an affection towards her, experiences how gray life is, and develops a personality that ultimately leads him to become a god himself, named Maotelus, the Dragon of Light.
