Previous Entry Flag Next Entryhi yall its me again...knowing that many of you are from alabama...which is not only in the bible belt...also it is in the heart of the deep south, and other southern states...i would like to know your opinion on the confederate flag...the reason i ask this is because i was asked in another livejournal community to create a a confederate...being in nccj, and being a person of color (im indian), i wanted to know what ya'll thought...even though i live in charlotte, which althoug, in the past 15 years has improved greatly is nonetheless a southern city which serves sweet tea, and is apart of the Bible Belt...i told this person that even though i had grown up in the south i would feel uncomfortable making a layout...although i have had friends tell me that the confederate flag does not represent slavery etc..but simply the heritage of the south...i just want to know what ya'll think, even if you arent from the south

Here's my take:The Confederate Flag is very racist to some, and not to others. So why create a big fuss, don't wear it, display it, or anything else. Keep it a personal thing. If we're aiming for PEACE, don't do anything to infringe on someone's culture. To some, the Confederate Flag is a big offense thanks...i really like that.i think that it does represent a big part of southern history (just as the swastica represents a big part of world history). however, history and heritage are too seperate concepts. they can be closely linked, but they're not synonimous. i think if someone wants a symbol to represent southern heritage, it should be a symbol that includes everyone from the south regardless of race, philosophy of life, gender, emotional orientation, etc. (not sure what that would be) i would have refused to. yeahhh thats what i was feeling, but i just thought...it was kind of interesting...because ive never heard point of view before...so thanks for replying!! well, my high school mascot is the rebel, so the confederate flag spends a lot of time in front of my face. I am white, but I am friends with most of the black students who attend my school and very close to some of them. The rebel flag does not offend me personally because I choose not to view it as a representation of slavery, but a representation of a former time. I do however understand why it offends some students at my school and it bothers me to have that happen. I see both sides of the argument, but when something is so inflammatory and causes such offense to some I think that it shouldn't be used casually.
