During this period it is important for children to have support in terms of protection good health, appropriate nutrition, stimulation, language development and most of all interaction with and attachment to caring adults.

The present study attempts to investigate the traditional practices of phase-paradhis (a denotifi... more The present study attempts to investigate the traditional practices of phase-paradhis (a denotified tribal group) associated with pregnancy, location and childbirth. A sample group of sixty women who were in the reproductive age group having one living child were covered. The sample was divided into age groups 15-29 years as younger age group and 30-45 years as older group. The present study was conducted at Ambarnath town in Ulhasnagar tehsil of Thane in Bombay Presidency. Many tribes lived in the settlement and in free colonies near the settlement. The study designed as in depth survey included as techniques, structured questionnaire, informal discussion, participant observation and focused group interviews. The paper discuss the customs, belief and practices related to maternal care into following heads-(i) Antenatal Care 0 Customs and rituals during pregnancy consultation for ANC, complication faced during pregnancy and its remedies, (ii) Diet during pregnancy – types of food consumed and dietary restrictions, (iii) care during delivery – place of delivery, person attending delivery methods used for initiating labour pains, instruments used for cutting umbilical cord and method used for expulsion of placenta and (iv) Post natal care – customs related to maternal care-body massage, work, abdomen binders, sexual abstinence, ceremonies after birth-purification of birth pollution and diet during lactation and dietary restriction. The paper also discusses how same of the healthy traditional practices are being replaced by not so healthy modern practices.

Demographic ageing is a global phenomenon. Industrialisation, urbanization, education and exposur... more Demographic ageing is a global phenomenon. Industrialisation, urbanization, education and exposure to life styles in developed countries are bringing changes in values and lifestyles of people. Improved life expectancy has contributed to an increase in the number of 60 th. The change in the demographic profile and the nature of an ageing society make the need to develop knowledge and skills in this area apparent. Community based system for caring for the older persons needs to be strengthened for which manpower needs to be trained to cater to emerging needs of elderly. A competency based modular course on gerontology has been developed which has 11 modules. The course has a provision for multi entry, multi exit and credit accumulation. The course can be offered at different levels ranging from certificate level to diploma level.
