Give More, Aids Awareness Month, Header design contest, Vgift contest
Give More!
We're pleased to announce that Give More is back. From now through December 31st, when you give someone a Paid account for a year, your friend will receive 1,000 LJ Tokens for free as a special holiday bonus! (Give More is only applicable to gift orders for others, not for purchases made for your own account.) LJ Tokens can be used to buy userpic add-ons, custom userheads, extra Paid account time, storage space, vgifts, and more. Enjoy!
Support AIDS Awareness
In honor of AIDS Awareness month, we've added a charitable vgift to the Gift Shop. This is a wonderful way to send a gift that keeps on giving. For each red ribbon you purchase for $3.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds (we'll cover the processing fees) to amfAR (the Foundation for AIDS Research), dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. We thank you for helping us make a difference. |

Congratulations to perplexedchick who won our December header design contest! We'll accept entries for the January header design contest up through Monday, December 20th, at 4PM (PST) at remixed. All entries that came in after the deadline have been entered into the January contest. For more information on the rules, read here. We thank you all, again, for making LiveJournal your canvas!
Vgift design contest
We received a delicious assortment of entries for our holiday vgift design contest. After much deliberation, we narrowed the entries down to 12 designs for your review. As a special treat, all LiveJournal users will get to send the winning vgift to five friends. The winning designer will be awarded 2,500 LJ Tokens. Finalists will get 1,000 LJ Tokens.
Satin-ribboned gifts for our Paid users!
If you have a paid or permanent account, you can send five free holiday presents now until Monday, December 6th, at 4pm, PST! You'll see both the free and the $0.99 gifts displayed until you've delivered them to your friends. If you're not receiving vgifts (from friends and/or Frank), you may have disabled them. To enable vgifts, visit Edit profile (under Profile), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and check your settings. Happy giving! |

Did you know ...?
Most of you are aware that we now offer custom userheads in the Gift Shop. Custom userheads provide a way to change the little person icon that appears next to your username to something seasonal or fun. What some users don't realize is that custom userheads can be gifted just like Paid account time or vgifts. If you think your friends might enjoy having a santa, snowman, or reindeer dressing up their posts, here's how you can give them:
- Visit the custom userheads section of the Gift Shop.
- Click the Buy as Gift tab above the userhead display area.
- Type your friend's username in the Recipient field, click the Next button, and wait for the page to reload.
- If you want the userhead delivered on a specific day (such as a holiday or birthday), select the desired delivery date. If you don't pick a new date, the gift will be delivered as soon as your payment is processed.
- Choose the userhead you want to give and click the Add to Cart button.
- Select your payment method and click the Check Out button to provide your payment information (this includes LJ Tokens). Once your friend receives the new userhead, she or he will need to select it on the Edit Profile page to begin using it (gifted userheads are not applied automatically). For full information on custom userheads, please see this FAQ. We've added a few new holiday-themed userheads to the Shop, so be sure to check them out!

Vgift design contest
We're still accepting entries for our holiday dessert vgift contest! We'll select 15 finalists and put it to a vote. All users will get to send the winning vgift to five friends. Entries will be accepted up through Monday, November 29th at 4PM, PST. The winner will get 2,500 LJ Tokens, and finalists will receive 1,000 LJ Tokens! Once more, the rules: Images should be 212 x 212 pixels, no more than 40kb if animated, in GIF or PNG format. Be sure the vgift shows an isolated object on a white or transparent background. We can't wait to see your stuff!
Did you know ...?
Today we'd like to talk to you about how to manage your journal and community settings so spammers don't come around. You can manage your privacy settings by clicking Account in the site header and selecting the Privacy tab. You'll see several options covering who can post comments to your journal: Everyone, all registered users, your friends, or nobody. In addition, you can choose whether you want to screen comments from everyone, anonymous users, non-friends, or non-friends with links. We highly recommend that you screen comments from non-friends with links. Lastly, you can set all new entries to everyone, just friends, or private to ensure there are no unwelcome surprises.
Once you've updated your personal journal settings, if you're a community maintainer, you can stay on that page, select your community's name from the drop-down menu at the top, and then click switch and do the same for the community comment settings. You can access membership and posting settings for your community by clicking on the Communities Manage tab in the nav bar and selecting the Settings link beside the name of the community. You can update your adult content warnings, choose whether your community offers open membership, join requests, or closed membership (by invitation only). In addition, you can decide who can post to your community: Anyone, members-only, or select members. We strongly recommend that you choose either of the last two moderation options (see image).
A final reminder: Whenever you encounter a spam entry in the moderation queue, please be sure to click Reject and mark as spam. You can then use the username hover menu and ban the user everywhere to protect yourself from further unwanted entries from that user. For more information, please see this FAQ. We'll be back next week with another fun tip!

iPhone app, Vgift contest, Free vgifts for Paid users
We're pretty starry-eyed about this month's winning header by marspathfinder, which is showering us in meteoric glow. We're also excited to tell you about our delicious new design contest (more on this below)! But before we get down to business, Frank is searching for ideas on where to take Meme for their fifth anniversary dinner. Tell him about your favorite dinner spot (be sure to illustrate with an appropriate userpic), and he'll send you a shiny black convertible to get you there (up through the first 10 pages of comments). |

- Text formatting improvements, including bold, italics, underline, strikeout
Important stuff to know:
- Webmoney is back: We restored the Webmoney payment option in the LiveJournal Shop.
- Squished comments:We fixed the comment display issue from last week that was impacting some site schemes.
- Thread expander: We also fixed the issue with long comment threads, where some sub-threads could not be expanded properly.
