This journal exists to provide support to those who are overweight, to those who care about them, and to those who realize that the overweight are persecuted and want to see this much-maligned group be treated with the kindness and acceptance everyone deserves.

This journal is open to anyone, including people who have chosen to try to lose weight and those who have chosen to accept their weight, family and friends of the overweight, and anyone who believes bigotry is wrong.

It is NOT a place to try and push people into "doing something" about their weight, as society itself already provides more than enough of that. There are also many other places, including livejournal communities, where you can learn more about diet, exercise, etc. This is also not a place to scare people about the health risks of being overweight. Most, if not all, overweight people are very aware of and already anxious about these risks. In addition, the pressure to be sexually attractive, with "attractive" defined as slender, is so strong that most overweight people would already far prefer to be thinner even if overweight posed no health risks.

There is a great deal of new evidence which strongly suggests that those who are chronically overweight differ genetically from those who are not. Some are able to lose weight despite this, while others find it difficult or impossible. There are also many people with medical conditions who find that the conditions and/or the medications they take have brought on a problem with overweight. Someday research may find a good, safe, non-drastic treatment for intractable overweight. However, this community promotes a policy of acceptance of all people regardless of their size.

This community is moderated, and naturally hurtful comments against the overweight, or, indeed, the underweight -- will not make it past the moderator. The delete key works just fine!
