Watch Harvey Keitel's FQ interview about Theater and New Orleans [21 Apr 2006|10:20am]
[ **mood** | excited ] In this interview, Keitel talks about New Orleans' need to preserve its culture and move forward to rebuild its soul. He compares it to a Jewish town post-holocaust that's culture gradually died because of neglect. You can see the interview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUyGHc8bTIsHe also endorses friend of twenty years, candidate, Roger Wilson, councilman-at-large, who has impressed the times picayune and gambit weekly with his ideas and outside the box thinking. He is a huge proponent of revitalizing the dilapidated areas of New Orleans while preserving their architecture. He also wrote, directed, and produced plays on Broadway and episodes of NYPD Blue and Deadwood, and is a HUGE proponent of building a viable THEATRE and FILM INDUSTRY in New Orleans, and having them inter-connect. Roger is running for one of the two council at large seats. So even if you already have someone you'd like to vote for, you can use your second vote for Roger. Please, for your safety and that of yours loved one, stay away from New Orleans until the authorities deam it safe for you to return. Thank you.

plea for help on behalf of all Gulf Coast and New Orleans residents [01 Sep 2005|05:13pm]
I drafted this yesterday on my way out of the storm affected areas. PLEASE forward this to anyone, everyone you can think of. Friends, family, individuals, corporations, national and internation news media. Also, if you feel so inclined, feel free to print out copies of this and hand them out to friends and family or even post them up in your hometown.Additionally, I'd like to ask you to contact your congresspeople and state representatives immediately and tell them to get more national guard and law enforcement officials down there ASAP. The stories I'm hearing from friends and friends of friends who are stuck in New Orleans and even in Baton Rouge are horrifying, it's turning into complete anarchy.I am writing to plea on behalf of all residents of the Gulf Coast region, from Louisiana to Florida. I am one of the lucky ones – I braved the storm and got out to be able to tell about it. I grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi but have lived and worked primarily in New Orleans for the last four years. Some friends and I evacuated that city late Saturday night to stay in Gulfport where we felt safer from the storm surge and flooding. Eight of us rode it out in my mother’s home, listening to and feeling the roaring winds and rains for almost 12 hours. Our back porch roof was ripped off completely, and the roof over our kitchen was punctured, leaving the kitchen in shambles from the effects of wind and rain. We count ourselves lucky, the house is still livable and everyone who stayed there is safe. My mother’s business and entire source of income, however, is completely destroyed. All of my friends from New Orleans have given up hope of salvaging their homes and possessions. Several friends, including my boyfriend’s father, are still stranded in New Orleans. My boyfriend and I were able to make it out of Gulfport to the nearest open airport, which was Baton Rouge, to fly north to help his company relocate and continue to do business. He is one of the lucky ones – he still has a job. When we left my mother’s house there was absolutely no communication in or out of the area, and we barely knew the status of Biloxi, the next city over, let alone much information about New Orleans.I implore you, I plead with you, and I beg you, HELP US. Millions of people are homeless, without the basic necessities of life, or worse yet, hurt or dead. Many of these jobs and homes will be irreplaceable. The majority of these people have no way right now to ask you for help themselves. I’m sure they won’t mind me requesting assistance on their behalf. Last year I felt the effects of the tsunami in Southeast Asia from the other side of the world. Myself and many of my friends donated what we could to help with the relief efforts there. All we can do right now is hope that the people of the world will be as generous towards us as we tried to be for those who suffered through that tragedy. I am begging you, do what you can and put yourself in our shoes. Please know, I have seen friends and neighbors banding together to help each other make it through this experience. I will be the first to condemn those who are seen looting useless personal property, but please understand that those who have been left behind are forced to do what they must to survive at this point. They cannot do much without outside help. This is what we need from all of you so urgently at this time. Please don’t let us down – we can’t make it without you.Mallory WhitfieldAugust 31, 2005 http://www.redcross.orghttp://www.fema.govhttp://www.salvationarmyusa.orghttp://www.feedthechildren.orghttp://www.networkforgood.org

cross-posted for a friend [29 May 2005|11:43am]
I know this is a longshot, but honestly, the drive is only about an hour and a half from New Orleans in good traffic (I grew up in Gulfport), and my friend (tangyrine aka _mandarina REALLY needs to find someone for this:If anyone knows someone who can play the part of Tonny Gnosis in the Biloxi Little Theatre production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch - PLEASE call Lara at 228-369-8743, or 228-872-2489.This is what I need:A man between the age of 20 and 30 (but if they're younger and look like they are in their 20's that's good enough)They have no lines to memorize and very little blocking, but they will have lines to read from backstage, and I want them to be very familiar with the script. The big thing is, this character has a solo, a song called "Wicked Little Town", so I definately need a singer. This person needs to be attractive, and of a slender build. Our showdates are June 8, 9, 10 and 11 (with a special midnight show closing night). We have rehearsal every day between then and now except the Tuesday night before we open, and next Friday - but I can be flexible with the right person.Rehearsals are from 6:30 till 9:00.again _ PLEASE pass this along...I am getting a little bit desperate, and it critical I have someone in this role. Thanks!!!!

Local film auditions are pretty easy to find as they come along - but I'm sure there are some that slip through all the networks lately... and theatre isn't even a part of that group.I miss theatre!! Any news anyone? Thanks!

Intern Company Auditions [29 Apr 2005|06:04pm]
Auditions will be held tomorrow (Saturday, April 30) from 2 - 4 p.m. in Tulane’s McWilliams Hall for the Shakespeare Festival’s Intern Training Program. No appointment is necessary. Please prepare one or two Shakespeare monologues, comedic or dramatic, each no more than one to two minutes in length. The Intern Training Program offers actors and theatre artists (ages 15 and older) with some stage experience the opportunity to immerse themselves in a summer of professional theatrical production. The program, which runs June 7 - August 10, culminates in a production of Two Gentlemen of Verona, directed by Gary Rucker. Training experience received from the Intern Program contributes to a strong foundation, needed to enter the world of professional theatre. Previous members have frequently gone on to perform in our mainstage shows. If you are interested in the Intern Program but can not make it tomorrow, DON’T PANIC! You can still apply and we will arrange another audition time.Applications are also still being accepted for the Apprentice Training Program, which offers aspiring younger actors (ages 12 - 14) the opportunity to participate in a brief training session within a professional theatre environment. The class will focus on tools for acting Shakespeare, and culminates in a scene showcase on the last day. The three day workshop is from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on June 11, 18 and 25. Participation in the Apprentice Program is a wonderful way to prepare for later involvement in the Intern Program. For more information on either program, contact the operations director by e-mail at brad@tulane.edu or by phone at 504.865.5105 ext 7.
