This paper describes the design and process for an advanced card technology capable of achieving ... more This paper describes the design and process for an advanced card technology capable of achieving wiring densities of the order of 500-1000 in/sq. inch. It's unique features consist of using a photosensitive dielectric (PSD) redistribution layer to produce very small (2-4.0 mil) blind vias, as well as utilizing PCB signal and power planes for global interconnect of fine grid surface mount components (QFPs, SMA, and ICs). The process consists of subtractive etched power cores and/or additively plated signal cores. The subcomposite is completed using conventional PCB processing. The redistribution layer is added sequentially by coating and/or laminating a photosensitive dielectric and photoprocessing the blind vias. The circuitization of the redistribution layer is completed by a full additive plating process and/or electro pattern plating. A solder mask is applied, and Eutectic Solder is electroplated over the surface for component assembly. A key element of the technology that will allow the escape of high I/O components with a dense interconnecting grid (8.0-20.0 mils/200-500 microns), is the utilization of the signal and power planes in the subcomposite structure

Research paper thumbnail of Evaluating donor recruitment strategies

Transfusion, 1992

When evaluating the efficacy of different types of donor recruitment strategies, one must conside... more When evaluating the efficacy of different types of donor recruitment strategies, one must consider two important issues: the safety of the donated blood and the adequacy of the supply of blood. These two issues are integrally related. A recruitment strategy that encourages too many individuals to donate-that is, individuals who are at risk for transfusion-transmissible diseases as well as those who are not at risk-will result in a supply of blood that is adequate but unsafe. Conversely, a recruitment strategy that encourages individuals who are not at risk for transfusion-transmissible diseases to donate, but does not motivate a sufficient number of individuals to do so, will result in a supply of blood that is safe but inadequate. The problem, then, is to develop a recruitment strategy that balances these two concerns. Clearly, one area that must be explored in this context is donor motivation-that is, the encouragement of regular donation by individuals who are not at risk.

Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of Community Functioning in People With Schizophrenia and Other Severe Mental Illnesses: A White Paper Based on an NIMH-Sponsored Workshop

Schizophrenia Bulletin, 2007

People with schizophrenia frequently have significant problems in community functioning. Progress... more People with schizophrenia frequently have significant problems in community functioning. Progress in developing effective interventions to ameliorate these problems has been slowed by the absence of reliable and valid measures that are suitable for use in clinical trials. The National Institute of Mental Health convened a workgroup in September 2005 to examine this issue and make recommendations to the field that would foster research in this area. This article reports on issues raised at the meeting. Many instruments have been developed to assess community functioning, but overall insufficient attention has been paid to psychometric issues and many instruments are not suitable for use in clinical trials. Consumer self-report, informant report, ratings by clinicians and trained raters, and behavioral assessment all can provide useful and valid information in some circumstances and may be practical for use in clinical trials. However, insufficient attention has been paid to when and how different forms of assessment and sources of information are useful or how to understand inconsistencies. A major limiting factor in development of reliable and valid instruments is failure to develop a suitable model of functioning and its primary mediators and moderators. Several examples that can guide thinking are presented. Finally, the field is limited by the absence of an objective gold standard of community functioning. Hence, outcomes must be evaluated in part by ''clinical significance.'' This criterion is problematic because different observers and constituencies often have different opinions about what types of change are clinically important and how much change is significant.

The results of the first set of hypotheses suggest that, independent of relationship structure, a supplier's use of noncoercive strateff~es is associated with increased distributor commitment, trust, and satisfaction, while coercive strate~es are associated with reduced levels of commitment and trust. The results also confirm the hypothesis that in highly relational systems, increases in noncoercive influence attempts negatively impact trust and satisfaction. Thus, high levels of relationalism reverse the initial positive impact of noncoercive influence attempts. These findings support the proposition that more communication is not always better. Once relational norms develop in a channel relationship, increases in the supplier's use of either coercive or noncoercive influence attempts negatively impact the relationship, j BUSN ~es 1997. 39.2.99-218 © 1997 r.7, or several years marketing scholars have acknowledged | that marketing exchange relationships are increasingly i more likely to be long-term than short-term . Achrol (1991) argues that increased global competition has led to the emergence of new forms of marketing organizations. These evolving organizations include networks of functionally specialized organizations whose activities are coordinated by a market driven focal organization. suggest the focal organization might establish relational exchanges with suppliers, competitors, governments, nonprofit organizations, ultimate customers, channel members, functional departments, employees, and other business units.

However, this technique remains less well known than other approaches among potential client organizations and within the simulation community. This paper provides a pithy tutorial on the system dynamics method and the modeling process, uses transport sector case examples to illustrate how such models have been valuable in practice, and compares key characteristics of system dynamics to discrete event simulation. We close with some guidance on factors to consider when selecting an analysis approach that is appropriate to the problem under study.
