In view of this, Taiwan provides a rich ”laboratory” for the study of transnational connections and comparisons. A comprehensive discussion of Transnational Taiwan cannot do without its historical component. I am interested in knowing the extent to which this approach has the potential to develop new understandings of the past by highlighting historical processes and relationships that transcend nation states and connect apparently separate worlds. The very geographical position of Taiwan Island puts it at the crossroads of maritime, cross-cultural, and interactional connections in the wake of the age of discovery. I start with a brief definition of the terminology, followed by a discussion that situates the transnational emergence in Taiwanese historiography. Special attention will be paid to the several discourses that have developed over the past five decades. The essa...

Being a meta-analysis, it points out both thematic concerns and methodological approaches of the past 20 years of its existence. It emphasize the theme of Taiwan subjectivity to be a momentum for both Taiwan independence processes in the 1990s and Taiwan studies, which subsequently aroused to analyse these processes. The paper also sets the articles presented in the special issue within this paradigm, it critically evaluates them and emphasize the new perspectives that the articles present.

It specifically deals with the complexities involved in defining the literary generic of historical narratives against the background of the transition of Taiwanese society from the Japanese colonial period onwards. In tandem with this thematic issue, it offers a close-up on how the collection and analysis of data in resonance with general changes in history writing over the past decades raises research questions about the nature of an inclusive Taiwanese identity.

The journal is devoted to all aspects of popular culture in East Asia. With the growth in popularity of Asian visual products in the Western world and the increasing strength of the Asian markets, this publication fulfils the need for an international journal that allows Western and Asian film, media, literary, music, fashion, digital media, television, art and cultural scholars alike to engage in discussion. The journal encourages articles that are both localised (towards a specific popular culture trend, figure or industry) as well as articles that are more global in their outlook (forging links between East Asian popular culture and wider global issues). 1. demonstrate the significance of language continuum in relation to identity formation.
To this end, Taiwanese is discussed as a particular variety of language. Literacy
practices in the Japanese colonial period (18951945) are contrasted with the
precolonial and post-Japanese colonial period. The paper maintains that policies
of Japanese linguistic colonialism strengthened the sociosemiotic cohesion amongst
speakers of Taiwanese, and discusses how this experience resonated with the new
reality after Japanese colonial rule in 1945 when Taiwan was reunited with its
Chinese historical and cultural heritage. It suggests that in the post-Japanese colonial
period, spoken Taiwanese continued to be a convincing vehicle of struggle for an
alternative national identity. A proper appreciation of this situation depends on how
we define literacy practices and comprehend these in the context of Taiwan・s
sociolinguistic landscape, past and present. Special reference will be made to
diglossia, the connotation between script and language, criteria of literacy (functional
and cultural), Chinese language standardisation and Japanese linguistic
colonialism.
