It is argued that the process of marginalisation of gajde music in the second half of the twentieth century reached a critical point where social and ideological developments intertwined and resulted in radical changes to the cultural and musical identity of this tradition. The gradual decline in the number of the gajde performers, contextual changes, political influences and the dissolution of traditional values led to a stage where a once central and popular musical practice became marginalised and relocated into relative cultural obscurity. In this project the employed concepts of marginality and identity are derived from a range of

These instruments are frequently associated with the Orient, while these instruments are also perceived as more complex in the performative sense, often demanding higher musical skills or experience. Therefore, double-reed instruments can be understood through their cultural and performative distinctiveness. For an individual to perform Balkan traditional music means acquiring certain skills, and articulating musical and social performatives. This means that the practice is based upon several dimensions: material-the musical instrument and aspects of how the instrument is made and used; intangible-the craft of music which includes aspects of performance; and social-how the performer recreates his own role and tradition. Since the musical performatives require specific intangible transfers of skills, the dissemination of that particular musical knowledge can be regarded as a 'silent process' which adds to the complexity of this phenomenon. All being considered a direct result of two sides of individual engagement, knowledge, and experience, specific aspects of music performativity could be seen as essential to the establishment of these instruments in the Balkan music tradition.

This article joins these two concepts into one scope and surveys the identity of both. In ideal (utopian?) traditional context, between private and public music experience (life), the context shows ideal vitality and consistence, while in an 'irregular' context these two concepts begin to distance themselves, opening space for marginality or so called 'errors'. This article studies bagpipe tradition in Serbia, at different stages of its development and in different periods, specifically focusing on rural and urban contexts in diverse sociopolitical conditions. Although bagpipe tradition still exists in Serbia it is far removed from what it once was, and the idea is to represent the contexts of that process, private and public, sociopolitical, and marginal aspects, from the 19 th century (or hypothetically before then) until today.

The first to think, quite rightly and with foresight, that Serbia was in need of a
phonograph for the purpose of making field recordings of national folk music was the
great Serbian composer, folk tunes collector and the author of the first
ethnomusicological study in Serbia published in 1902 (though at the end of 19th century
some attempts in this direction were made by Tihomir Ostojić, 1865-1921), Stevan
Stojanović Mokranjac (1856-1914). As an associate of the Ethnographic Board of the
Royal Academy of Serbia, and someone highly experienced in collecting folk tunes,
Mokranjac submitted a detailed proposal for the purchase of the phonograph to the
Ethnographic Board. He was aware of unreliability of numerous transcriptions sent to the
Academy by untrained laymen from villages and small towns around Serbia. Had there
been a positive response to his proposal, Serbia would now be in possession of
phonographic recordings of its national folk music from the very beginning of the 20th
century. At the time he was the only musician in the Ethnographic Board of the Academy
and unfortunately his proposal was not accepted.
