Whether you’re shopping for a husband, boyfriend, dad, or brother, you’re sure to have at least one guy on your list who’s notoriously picky when it comes to gifts. As someone who reviews stuff for a living, it may not shock you to learn that I am that guy. By the time I’m talking about something I want, I have already researched it extensively and am about to place the order — if it’s not already on the way. This makes me an exceedingly hard-to-please gift recipient, but difficult does not mean impossible. To make it a bit easier for my relatives and friends, I asked a group chat of similarly discerning giftees to share any advice they might have for those entrusted with the unenviable task of shopping for us.
The first rule is to determine what your recipient is really into and then go in the opposite direction. If they’re already into photography, they will have strong opinions on cameras. This is also why, generally speaking, getting him gear is a losing bet. Better to give something consumable that can only be enjoyed for as long as it lasts, such as a statusy candle or fancy cakes. Additionally, multiple chat members, myself included, report that their partners ask them to stop shopping in the weeks leading up to birthdays and holidays — a “treat embargo,” as one friend calls it.
