an Orson Welles community

The life and works of Orson Welles.

Photobucket

Orson Welles was, like many public figures, a mass of contradictions and the subject of many competing viewpoints and studies. This community is for the exploration and appreciation of his life and works. All opinions are welcome, if expressed with respect (and, one hopes, a dose of humor). This includes reviews, reactions, finds, art, essays, observations, discussion questions--anything you can think of, whether you're new to Welles or saw Citizen Kane opening night. As unlikely as that may be. And feel free to introduce yourself when you join, and let us know how you came to Mr. Welles and some of your favorites.

Because of the strong feelings Welles has evoked, I ask you to remain respectful of him and each other. This does not mean you must believe everything the man did was genius, or that you cannot question the observations of others. Please do so in a constructive fashion. Bashing will not be tolerated, but there's a lot of room on this side of bashing for honest criticism and rebuttal. It should be fun for everyone.

More to follow. With prettier graphics, I hope.

Wikipedia intro:
George Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 – October 10, 1985) was an Academy Award-winning American director, writer, actor and producer for film, stage, radio and television. Welles was also an accomplished magician, starring in troop variety spectacles in the war years. During this period he became a political activist and commentator through journalism, radio and public appearances with political figures.

Noted for his innovative dramatic productions as well as his distinctive voice and personality, Welles is widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished dramatic artists of the 20th century. In 2002 he was voted as the greatest film director of all time in the British Film Institute's poll of Top Ten Directors.
