Sir John Barbirolli interviewed by Jordan Whitelaw of WGBH-FM in 1959
Jordan Whitelaw
Well, Sir John, it really is a pleasure not only to have you in Boston again after many many years, but to have you as our guest at WGBH. But it's a long time since we've seen you here in Boston.
Sir John Barbirolli
It must be, what, 18 years?
JW
Well, I remember when you played with the New York Philharmonic.
SJB
That's right.
JW
Well, you played (Henry) Purcell, Brahms with Artur Schnabel, the b-flat (Piano) Concerto (No.2), and the Schubert (Symphony No.) 7.
SJB
It was like this
JW
Correct?
SJB
Very flattering that you should have such a memory of that concert.
JW
No, that concert was a pleasure. And when we, when I found out that you were coming back to this country, I was hoping very much that you would be conducting the Boston Symphony for the first time.
SJB
But it's something I've looked forward to for years, and now I'm actually in the throes of doing it.
JW
Well, how how long has it been since you've been back to America?
SJB
It's exactly 15 years since I left for the last time, But I did go home the year before that in 1942 during the summer recess to do a series of benefit concerts in England. And that's quite a story. Would you like me to embark?
JW
Is that during the war?
SJB
During the war.
JW
Well, how did you get back?
SJB
In 1942. That was the height of the, at the submarine mines. Well, it's the then first Lord of the admiralty, AV Alexander, who is now Lord Alexander, the leader of the opposition, The house of Lords, was a very great friend of mine, and a very key position amateur, of course, and he used to write me and say, “You know, John, we missed you terribly because music's flourishing has never flourished before. And it'd be lovely to have you here.”
But I was dying to get home and see my family. So I said, “If you'll get me home, I'll come with the greatest of pleasure.”
So apparently he went to see (Sir Winston) Churchill, who made the remark that he said, “Well,” he says, “If he's fully lost, he wants to come, just let him come!”
They got me passage on the little Norwegian freighter, 3000 tons, and we had a rather perilous passage. It took us 23 days from New York to Liverpool.
JW
What was it worth it!
SJB
Oh! Rather they had a wonderful time. As a matter of fact, when the war was over Alexander talked to me one day. He said, “You know, out of that convoy of 74 ships which had left New York 32 arrived.” So the fates must have been kind to me.
It was most exciting. And I really was very thrilled to be back home at that moment.
JW
Well, when did you take over the Halle Orchestra?
SJB
That was in the next year 1943. I'll talk about the Halle. Last year, 1958, we celebrated our centenary 100th birthday, the first British orchestra to reach that venerable age.
And what rather impressed, some of your colleagues I met today when I tell them (was) that in a hundred years history I'm only the fourth permanent director of the orchestra.
JW
Four in a hundred years?!
SJB
(Sir Charles) Halle, the founder, Hans Richter, who conducted the first performances of the Wagner's “Ring,” (Sir) Hamilton Harty, and now me.
JW
Now are you. Well, how much longer do you intend to stay?
SJB
Ah!
JW
Well, as a matter of fact, I'm really curious about something. I mean, uh, you're on leave on sabbatical...
SJB
Because, you know, for 15 years I've practically devoted myself to them, and they've been asking me to come back here for many years now. And having seen them safely to their centenary, I thought the time had come, come and see
some of my old friends.
You know, time is passing and I thought otherwise, it might be pretty rather a premium on longevity, shall we say.
JW
Well, how'd you like New York after sixteen years?
SJB
Well it was glad to be back and see. You know, there's still 32 of my boys left in the orchestra.
JW
It's about a third of the orchestra.
SJB
It's quite a lot, you know, after that amount of time. And what really touched me very deeply was that with the first morning when I went to rehearsal, after the 32 were there,
but all those who have been pensioned, and they're still alive, all turned up to see me too.
JW
In other words, a really sentimental occasion. And you like that.
SJB
Uh, does that mean.
JW
I see in your program tomorrow night, you're including an arrangement of music from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Now I don't know this arrangement of this suit. I remember well your suite of (Henry) Purcell which you recorded with the (New York) Philharmonic.
SJB
That's right. Well, this, uh, (Fitzwilliam) Virginal book arrangement I made many years ago, curious enough when I was on vacation in Vancouver, and it bears the date the 6th of June, 1940.
SJB
1940. And I made it, really because I'm very fond of this music, and it's music that is very little known outside the small circle of people who were interested in that.
JW
We're still in the dark.
SJB
That's right. And so I thought I'd try to make it better now to the general public. And it has proved a very great success everywhere on the continent. And I played it in the Philadelphia in various (other places), Washington the other night.
And it surprises people that there was in the 16th century a school of music as, a rather school of composition, as interesting and original and modern sounding is that, which has full of false relationships
JW
Fourth and fifth?
SJB
Fourth and fifith, and has a tremendous vitality and beauty of its own, I think.
JW
Well, I assume that you're, you... when there was no harmony to fill in, it was ...
SJB
No no! That you must not do it. That's why they're so difficult to arrange these things that you could only build contrapuntally if the occasion presents itself that you can make imitations and things like that.
But if you, the moment you thicken it or add any harmonies, you take away that peculiar flavor, shall we say, that that music has.
JW
Well, you got some fascinating effects in the last movement
with the cello.
SJB
With the ponticello and then the spring bows and things (like that).
JW
I, in listening to the rehearsals I know in the (William) Walton the Partita (for Orchestra).
SJB
Yeah?
JW
Well, frankly, when the first movement was over, I thought the whole piece was over. And I was terribly surprised that morning more music came along.
SJB
That I gathered is the first Boston performances.
JW
Yes it is
SJB
Although it was written, I gave the first English performances. It was actually written for this country (USA) because it was commissioned by the Cleveland orchestra.
JW
Oh, George Szell.
SJB
Yeah.
JW
But one thing that struck me, and I hope Sir William Walton won't object, but I felt that the first movement was very close to the Johannesburg Festival Overture.
SJB
No, I think, really I think you're saying that is really a compliment to him that his music has what Ernest Newman always likes to call “Look the composer's fingerprints.”
JW
Well it has that, but there's no question about that the other two movements are completely new to me.
The one thing, though I must confess, I was sorry about because I know on records you seem to be very fond of (Antonin) Dvorak, which I assume, since you recorded Dvorak you are (fond of).
SJB
Yeah.
JW
Well, I have a soft spot in my heart for Dvorak. And that's not terribly fashionable in this country.
SJB
No, no.
JW
But I was really kind of...
SJB
In fact, what I sent, a whole list of symphonies, you know, there's about... And this is the program they chose out of the...
JW
Oh, I see.
SJB
... material I've sent them, a long list of works that I was prepared to do.
JW
Are you doing any in this country at all? I mean, Dvorak.
SJB
I did the Fourth (Symphony) in New York.
JW
Oh, I see. Well, that was done here about...
SJB
Three weeks ago. The one I'd like to do here one day is the Second (Symphony) which is, you know, they're all cockeyed, numbering of those symphonies.
JW
Because the number one is two...
SJB
Number two is really number nine. Or ... I don't know.
JW
Because I think number one becomes number six. Because as a matter of fact, there isn't even a recording of that any more.
SJB
But uh ... and then did you know the little third, that's a charming one, hardly ever played.
JW
I own them all, except Number five. I have two three and four, one, two, three, four, then I'm a snob and I avoid Number five. I have lots of chamber music, lots of chamber...
SJB
The champions of chamber music! I've just, I think it's been released. I've just done a very rarely heard piece of his for two oboes, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns and cello and double bass.
JW
Well, I've only read about this. Anyway I haven't heard it.
SJB
That's an enchanting piece. Now I believe that has been ...
JW
Because I know the strings serenade.
SJB
Yes ... No, no. This is for ...
JW
I understand ...
SJB
This is double wind quintet, two horns, one cello and one double bass. I think it's being released here. You might have a look and check because I think it's fascinating.
JW
Wasn't that coupled with an oboe ...
SJB
I mean, Oboe Concerto.
JW
And that's with your wife.
SJB
Well, I don't like to mention these things.
JW
(laugh) Oh, no, as a matter of fact, you told me something which really came as a surprise in the old Bush Recordings.
SJB
Yes. She is ...
10:22
JW
But the name (Evelyn) Rothwell, the oboe ...
SJB
She is the oboe in all the original Brandenburgs, uh, Brandenburg (Concertos) set. And they've reissued those now, I think in long play and she's rather amused. Because she's not a very old lady to find herself listed now as part of historical record.
JW
In the historical! Oh, she's flattered. Well, she's young enough to be flattered.
SJB
That's right.
JW
There's a point where she is ...
SJB
And if you've got any of the, um... At the Glyndebourne (Festival) Opera recordings she's with Fritz Busch. She's in all those ...
JW
She's in all album.
SJB
Because she was the first oboe at the Glydebourne ...
JW
Now actually ...
SJB
... from the very first season.
JW
Now I have every one of those from a long time. As a matter of fact from a long time ago, I have a recording of Schubert (Symphony) Number Four where the gentleman by the name was Sir John Barbirolli, the conductor.
SJB
Uh, that was the (New York) Philharmonic
JW
Philharmonic.
SJB
Very lovey symphony.
JW
Very wonderful, I mean, yeah.
SJB
That is sadly neglected
JW
And you never, never hear that. But the, uh ... And that's never come out. You know, sometimes the old ones are put out ...
SJB
Yeah.
JW
... that's disappeared.
SJB
Thta's a very beautiful piece.
JW
Well now that I ask you a very tactless question. How do you like conducting the Boston Symphony orchestra?
SJB
Oh, I don't expect this. I'm having a wonderful time, and I like to think that they're enjoying it, too, because we're having a very pleasant few days of real music making together
JW
You know, I have to, I hate to confess this, but going to symphony hall for one of the rehearsals, you're talking about chamber music, I thought of the ridiculous idea of the (Franz Schubert's) “Trout Quintet” (D. 667 Opus 114),
with Serge Koussevitzky, bass, Sir John Barbirolli, cello, Pierre Monteux, viola, Charles Munch, violin, and Leonard Bernstein, piano.
SJB
There we are!
JW
Who was there!
SJB
Oh, so much solo, by the solo .
JW
Extraordinary. Well, Sir John, it really has been a pleasure to have you here. And I thank you not only on behalf of WGBH, but I thank you on behalf of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
William Pierce (WGBH announcer)
As our special intermission feature, you've heard a conversation with our guest conductor of two weeks ago, Sir John Barbirolli.
