By considering aesthetic cosmopolitanism as a tool to understand how individuals and social groups appropriate the sphere of culture in a global world, the authors are concerned with its operationalization on two strongly interwoven levels, macro and micro, structural and individual. Based on the discussion of theoretical perspectives and empirically grounded research (qualitative and quantitative, conducted in many countries), this volume unveils new insights, on tourism and food, architecture and museums, TV series and movies, rock, K-pop and samba, by providing resources for making sense of aesthetic preferences in a global perspective.

Hence Regev explores several dimensions through which pop-rock music has been a key force in propelling cultural cosmopolitanism, especially at the micro level of bodily practices and everyday life. Pop-rock musical styles and genres, as clusters of sonic idioms and as physical entities, have penetrated urban spaces and individual human bodies all over the world and constitute the aesthetic cultures of cosmopolitanism. Regev’s arguments revolve around the idea of the sonic ‘thingness’ of music, how it turns the cultural body into a cosmopolitan body and its effect on various dimensions of culture. Inspiration and insights in this regard are brought from such areas of research and theory as cultural globalization, sociology and anthropology of the cultural body, as well as so-called ‘thing theory’ (Material Culture Studies, ANT—actant network theory, etc.) in order to propose possible foci for investigating how musical cosmopolitanism comes into being and functions as a cultural reality.

Soon enough, popular music turns up as a major subject. It seems that popular music has become one of the few areas in Israel in which a vivid scene of cultural activity takes place, without public funding, and which plays a role in shaping a sense of identity for various groups.

This talk will present elements from a work-in-progress on the impact of cultural globalization on the performance of embodied knowledge in everyday life. The paper takes lead from my work on the globalization of pop-rock music; especially how its materiality as sound affected embodied musical knowledge worldwide. It then looks at additional realms, notably food and clothing, where global proliferation of material objects, gadgets and devices has induced acquisition and performance of embodied knowledge in routine everyday life. Framing the discussion, theoretically, is the notion of cultural cosmopolitanism.
