All U.S. Internet Providers will be policing downloads by July 12, 2012 Originally posted by lunarising at All U.S. Internet Providers will be policing downloads by July 12, 2012Please repost this? I have never begged for one of my posts to be boosted. I am just so worried for my friends and want you to know.According to this article, dated March 15, 2012:http://www.digitaltrends.com/webnews/major-isps-turn-into-copyright-police-by-july-says-riaa/"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download. No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.Fox news confirms this:http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/03/17/us-isps-become-copyright-cops-starting-july-12/Youtube video explaining this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5OG0R-yS-cSIGN THE PETITIONCurrent Tags: good causes, internet

Legal whale slaughter - NO! I've just signed an urgent petition at Avaaz.org to protect whales. Read more below, or click this link to join me in signing: http://www.avaaz.org/en/whales_under_threat_14/98.php?CLICKTF-----Dear friends, **The International Whaling Commission has just unveiled a proposal to legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in 24 years.Countries are now deciding their first responses -- and they're watching public reaction closely. New Zealand called its provisions -- which include a legal quota for hunting endangered fin whales -- "offensive," "unacceptable," and "inflammatory." But other key nations are rumoured to be leaning in support of it. They need to hear from us now.( Avaaz has launched an urgent petition to show our leaders their people want to protect whales, not hunt, kill, and sell them.Collapse )**SOURCES:"Whaling plan draws anger from green groups" - BBC, 22 April 2010http://www.avaaz.org/whaling_green_anger"IWC whaling proposal 'offensive'" - New Zealand Herald, 23 April 2010http://www.avaaz.org/whales_offensiveBackground on the 1986 international moratorium on whaling:http://www.avaaz.org/international_whaling_moratoriumRead the actual proposal here (PDF format): http://www.avaaz.org/whale_proposalDrama Level: infuriatedCurrent Tags: animals, good causes

This and that about two of my boys Harry Knowles from Ain't It Cool News got a few exclusive glimpses of J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek film! The full report is here, containing some minor spoilers but it's random tidbits out of context which can't spoil the plot, IMHO. But I just had to quote what he said about Karl Urban, who of course plays McCoy:_But then there’s McCoy – when you see McCoy… you’ll realize how metaphysically perfect Karl Urban was for the casting of the character. He’s got that right cantankerous, best buddy, ethical, but anything for his friend type of doc attitude – and he has it down pat. He’s helping Jim to get onto a ship, but in a million years I wouldn’t spoil that. It’s funny, without being ridiculous. And it begins to exhibit the early kernels of a classic Bones/Kirk interaction. Best friends with a history – and perhaps this moment is a key moment of that history. The favor that launched a career? Perhaps that is what I saw._Eeeeeeeeh!!! :DAlso about Karl, from this article about the charity KidsCan:_The charity also plans to start a "Stand Tall" initiative in August to give children excursions with high achievers such as Williams, TV3 journalist Mike McRoberts and Kiwi-born Hollywood actor Karl Urban."It's for kids who have never got past the corner dairy, to go on excursions with successful people," Mrs Helson said."They are going to learn values, goal-setting and things that are going to help motivate them to achieve."Mr Nicholls said such role models showed students they could do anything._Lucky kid that gets the excursion with Karl!On to Neal McDonough - did I mention that I saw Tin Man in the meantime? Probably not. ( Ramblings about it behind the cutCollapse )*ahem* Anyway, this is what I wanted to post:Neal McDonough moving to 'Housewives'Neal is another one of those talented actors who's been in several canceled TV series, so go him for getting a regular role on an established series, but did it have to be Housewives???!!! *sigh* (In case it wasn't clear from that comment, no, I don't like that series and frankly don't get why it's so successful.)Right, I need to go, some more Hobbit related stuff later. See ya, have a great Saturday!Drama Level: cheerfulCurrent Tags: films: star trek (reboot), good causes, people: karl urban, people: neal mcdonough, tv

Call for action! Dear flist,I just sent a message to my leader urging for the creation of international biofuels standards to ensure that the current expansion of the biofuels industry does not damage the environment or drive up food prices. This is important, and I thought you might be interested:http://www.avaaz.org/en/biofuel_standards_now/98.php?CLICK_TF_TRACK As developed countries push for biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels, increased demand for the crops that make biofuels is causing the destruction of rainforests (and thereby further endangering species like the already-rare Borneo Orang-Utans)--cleared to make way for plantations--and a rise in food prices, as farmers grow crops for fuel instead of food. Just last week, the UN World Food Program announced a massive budget deficit as a result of rising food prices, caused by a combination of biofuels growth, bad weather, and high oil prices. This Friday through Saturday, the G20 group of countries--the twenty biggest economies, responsible for more than 75% of the world's carbon emissions--will meet in Chiba, Japan to begin the climate change discussions leading up to the G8 summit this summer. Before the summit, Avaaz.org is creating a global cry for sustainable biofuels. By sending a message to your leader urging for biofuels standards, you can make a difference on this critical issue. Take action now:http://www.avaaz.org/en/biofuel_standards_now/98.php?CLICK_TF_TRACK(Don't know who "your leader" is? No problem - the form on the linked page will look up the relevant leader based on the country you choose.)Thanks!!!PS: For those who haven't noticed/heard yet, 20% of the proceeds of Dom's photo exhibition will benefit the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation. Now I wish even more that I could afford one...Drama Level: determinedCurrent Tags: environment, good causes

Reason #1289672 why I love Daniel Thanks to janinelearner for the heads up - I checked Myspace earlier today but this wasn't up yet. From Daniel Dae Kim's Myspace:_STAY STRONG Sometimes having some unexpected extra time can be a good thing - more time with your loved ones, catching up on movies, books or sometimes, just plain ole' sleeping. In my case, I've been able to use it for a labor of love. I just finished directing the video for a song by Harold Perrineau. It's called "Stay Strong." It's a kind of 'thank you card' to the troops in Iraq and their service to our country. Harold wrote the song over the summer and when he played it for me, I was so moved by it that I offered to direct the video. Not only do I think it's a great song, but I really respect that the fact that he agreed to donate the profits from the sale of the video to charity, specifically The Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury. It was shot and edited here in Hawaii (except for the war footage, which was generously provided by ABC News) with some very talented young filmmakers at my side. Without their help, along with some incredibly bighearted members of the LOST crew, this video could not have been made. A big mahalo nui to all of you.You can find it on my video page here, or on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrow1clxEdQRegardless of how you feel about the war, I hope you'll agree that our troops deserve our support - especially during this special season. Speaking of which, happy holidays to all of you. Thank you for helping make this year such a great one, even through its darkest moments.May 2008 bring you many blessings, and I'll talk to you again in the new year.Cheers!_The song really is good - Harold has a beautiful voice - and the video is very fitting and well directed, IMHO. Well done you two and everyone else involved! ♥Please help spread the word about this - it's for a good cause!Drama Level: touchedCurrent Tags: good causes, music, people: daniel dae kim, people: harold perrineau

Call for action! I cannot believe these idiots just don't f***ing get it that we have to f***ing act NOW! *growl*I just signed an emergency petition trying to save the crucial climate change talks in Bali, Indonesia right now by telling the US, Canada and Japan to stop blocking an agreement. You can sign it here:http://www.avaaz.org/en/bali_emergency/98.php?CLICK_TF_TRACKAlmost all countries have agreed to cut rich country carbon emissions by 2020--which scientists say is crucial to stop catastrophic global warming, and will also help bring China and the developing world onboard. But with just 2 days left in the conference, the US and its close allies Canada and Japan have rejected any mention of such cuts. We can't let three governments hold the world hostage and block agreement on this desperate issue. There's still 2 days left to turn this around - click below to sign the petition - it will be delivered direct to summit delegates, through stunts and in media advertisements, so our voices will actually be heard. But we need a lot of us, fast, to join in if we're going to make a difference. Just click on the link to add your name: http://www.avaaz.org/en/bali_emergency/98.php?CLICK_TF_TRACKSome additional info from the e-mail I got from avaaz.org:Today marks the 10th anniversary of the expiring Kyoto pact, but Japan, the US and Canada don't seem to want a workable global deal to follow it. There is almost universal agreement in Bali that the idea of 2020 climate targets should be included, making possible a deal to bring the developing world onboard over time. As the news links below make clear, the US, Japan and Canada are destroying that delicate bargain, not even allowing the idea to be mentioned. We're doing everything we can. Tens of thousands of Canadian Avaaz members have launched an ad campaign telling their government not to betray them -- our Japanese members are emailing their leaders -- while our American members will send their own message to Bali as Al Gore and Congressional and local representatives land there, asking negotiators to ignore the official US delegation because it does not represent them. The two links: http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/12/10/news/climate.php and http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/12/10/news/climate.phpThanks!!!Drama Level: enragedCurrent Tags: environment, good causes

*blinks* Brazil creates largest tropical rainforest preserve_Mon 4 Dec 2006 22:24:51 GMTBRASILIA, Brazil, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Brazil created the world's largest tropical rainforest preserve on Monday in a section of the Amazon scarred by illegal logging and decades of violence between loggers, ranchers, conservationists and land rights activists. The preserve covers more than 58,000 square miles (15 million hectares) -- an area larger than England -- across seven parks in Para, an eastern Amazon state heavily exploited by illegal loggers and land speculators.A U.S. nun named Dorothy Stang was gunned down there last year, allegedly by ranchers who wanted her to stop helping locals fight for land rights.Para state Gov. Simao Jatene said he created the new parks to stop land speculators from selling fake titles. He also said sustainable economic activities will be allowed in some areas so locals can support themselves."We're trying to avoid this trap of preservation versus production. Quite frankly, this bipolar view has done more to hurt than to help," he told Reuters by phone. The Amazon, the world's largest tropical rainforest, is the planet's most diverse terrestrial ecosystem and is thought to hold a quarter of all species. In Brazil, the Amazon covers an area larger than India and huge swathes of land have already been cleared. Para has suffered particular damage because it lies along the southern and eastern borders of the Amazon and is more easily accessible than areas further inland. The preserve expands a key wildlife corridor for jaguars, monkeys and birds in northern Para and also protects areas in conflict-ridden central Para.Jatene, whose term ends Dec. 31, said he worked for years to demarcate the new parks. Recent changes to national forestry laws gave states more power, paving the way for the preserve's creation.Environmentalists said creating the parks was an important step, but that there is more to be done."Just creating protected areas isn't enough," said Claudio Maretti of the World Wildlife Fund, which supported the new parks in Para. "You have to develop an economy for the forest."Jatene acknowledged that the parks will require continued care after his term ends."In Brazil, maintaining something can be as challenging as doing it in the first place," he said._Oh wow - I never expected something like this to happen, and part of me fears it's too god to be true/more than a propaganda ploy! But the other part of me - well it's quite speechless with joy! Now let's hope they manage to pull this off and serve as an example for others... *crosses everything she can* Drama Level: hopefulCurrent Tags: environment, good causes
