Cognitive linguists have proved that semantics is realised in context and contributes to cognition. This article aims to analyse which semantic roles are prevalent for using computer security terms in context. Our evidence proves that the term’s meaning and semantic role in the frame corresponding to a communicative event are interrelated. The research has been carried out on a manually collected corpus of computer security texts, comprising terms in their contexts. The data are analysed as follows. First, a thematic categorisation of terms is carried out. Then semantic frame modelling is applied. After that, we generalise our findings and achieve sufficient abstraction in the conclusion about the presence of form – meaning – usage interdependence in professional discourse and LSP. Finally, we discuss the place of semantic framing in the multimodality of professional communication regarding the logic and philosophy of language.

This claim is particularly relevant for the sphere of professional communication, where “inadequate knowledge transfer and the ensuing ambiguity in knowledge acquisition result in problems on language and conceptual levels” (Bogatikova at al. 2014). The evidence suggests that targeted language use underpins deliberate conceptual frame creation, thus, provides a solid ground for adequate special knowledge transfer (Beger 2011; Cameron 2003; Steen 2011a; Steen 2011b). Another feature of modern society is the interplay of two opposite trends: intensification and specification of separate scientific fields on the one hand, and reinforcement of interdisciplinary links on the other hand. Therefore the study of terminology that provides deep understanding and insight into the fundamental knowledge of particular field of science as well as reasoning for interdisciplinary knowledge continuity is particularly topical. Our research centered around the issue of term semantic transformation in different discourses provides evidence on both etymological and metaphorical consistency of the term virus in medical, pharmaceutical, and computer discourses. The invariability of conceptual frames of virus in the three discourses mentioned above has been proved via the implementation of Five step method (Steen 2007). Subsequently, we discuss the implication of our research for special knowledge transfer enhancement, namely deliberate term usage for framing coherent with both background and scientific knowledge of an addressee. In this paper we suggest that efficient processing of natural language should be considered as a ... more In this paper we suggest that efficient processing of natural language should be considered as a complex procedure, which comprises such stages as knowledge encoding by means of natural language units, its digitalization, and machine processing, which make up man – machine knowledge mediation. For this reason, methods chosen for natural language processing should be efficient for both knowledge encoding and knowledge retrieval, as well as for working with textual data of different length, since knowledge can be compressed either to words or to larger syntactic units.

The paper provides an overview of modern trends in Natural Language Processing, namely methods for deep learning. We have studied them as potential add-ons to the TSBuilder program based on the Rosenblatt’s Perceptron initiated for automated term system building. Such methods as word embedding, convolutional, recurrent, and recursive neural networks are viewed through the prism of their application for the refinement of term extraction and categorization, as well as subsequent neural network training. Statistics on these methods’ representation in scientific databases is also provided.

The article deals with the problem of semantic roles’ distribution in the frame VIRUS designated ... more The article deals with the problem of semantic roles’ distribution in the frame VIRUS designated by the term virus in the computer virology discourse. The study is conducted in the framework of the cognitive discursive paradigm of modern linguistics and comprises the following linguistic approaches to the studies of language for special purposes: cognitive terminology, frame-based terminology, and frame semantics. The article gives a brief overview of the development of computer virology with reference to mental framing of the key aspects in the field. A frame is considered as part of context and a situation model representing a reallife event. Ch. Fillmore’s frame semantics and the identification of deep cases or semantic roles are used as the main method of data analyses. We have analyzed the most typical plans of semantic roles’ distribution in the frame VIRUS. The semantic roles of the frame VIRUS include Agent, Counteragent, Object, Addressee, Patient, Result, and Instrument. It has been found that besides the most distinctive distribution of semantic roles in the frame VIRUS, showing that the malicious program is conceptualized as the aggressor and a computer or its user as a victim, which correspond to the roles of the Agent and the Patient, there might be the frames with a virus in the role of the Counteragent, the Object, the Result, the Instrument, the Patient, and even the Place. We come to the conclusion that analysis of the roles’ distribution helps to determine relations among the event participants and the way the situation is conceptualized and represented in the form of mental models in human minds.

visual metaphor. We aim at developing a reliable method for visual metaphors identification. For this purpose we have employed up-to-date methods for linguistic metaphor identification and conceptual metaphors modelling, which have been modified in compliance with the data specifics. The Procedure has been applied for the extraction of knowledge, transferred via visual metaphors in the World War II propaganda posters by KUKRYNIKSI. The results obtained include visual metaphors and conceptual metaphor models simulated in the process of the six-step visual metaphor analysis, which provide deeper understanding and profound interpretation of the artists’ intention; modification and validation of the methods for visual metaphors identification. In conclusion we discuss the perspectives of using the methods for other types of data.

Professional communication between an expert and a non-expert, the so-called trans-discursive com... more Professional communication between an expert and a non-expert, the so-called trans-discursive communication, presupposes special knowledge transfer and acquisition. Asymmetry in communicants' knowledge causes ambiguity and conceptual misrepresentation. Precise knowledge transfer in the context of transdiscursive communication can be achieved by means of knowledge mediation. In this context metaphor accomplishes the function of a transdiscursive knowledge mediation tool. This cognitive mechanism encourages conceptual mapping of specialized knowledge from a routine area to some knowledge domain. The study of metaphoricity of terms provides ground for finding language tools for cognition management. For discourse analyses we have focused on specialized texts from scientific journals and popular magazines obtained from the Corpus of Contemporary American English as a result of the key word in context search. We aim at proving the evidence for special knowledge mediation necessity and efficiency in the context of transdiscursive communication.

Current development of modern information oriented society requires special attention to the proc... more Current development of modern information oriented society requires special attention to the process of knowledge transfer and acquisition. This claim is particularly relevant for the sphere of professional communication, where “inadequate knowledge transfer and the ensuing ambiguity in knowledge acquisition result in problems on language and conceptual levels” (Bogatikova, Isaeva, Rukavishnikova 2014a). The evidence suggests that targeted language use underpins the deliberate conceptual frame creation, thus, provides a solid ground for adequate special knowledge transfer (Beger 2011; Bogatikova et al. 2014b, Cameron 2003; Steen 2011). Another feature of modern society is the interplay of two opposite trends: intensification and specification of separate scientific fields, on the one hand, and reinforcement of interdisciplinary links, on the other hand. Hence, we believe, that the study of terminology that provides deep understanding and insight into the fundamental knowledge of a particular field of science as well as reasoning for interdisciplinary knowledge continuity is particularly topical. Our research centered on the issue of term semantic transformation in different discourses provides evidence on both etymological and metaphorical consistency of the term virus in medical, pharmaceutical, and computer discourses. The invariability of conceptual frames of virus in the three discourses mentioned above has been proved via the implementation of the Five step method (Steen 2007). Subsequently, we discuss the implication of our research for the special knowledge transfer enhancement, namely deliberate term usage for framing, coherent with both background and scientific knowledge of an addressee.

The article deals with the problem of semantic roles’ distribution in the frame VIRUS designated ... more The article deals with the problem of semantic roles’ distribution in the frame VIRUS designated by the term virus in the computer virology discourse. The study is conducted in the framework of the cognitive discursive paradigm of modern linguistics and comprises the following linguistic approaches to the studies of language for special purposes: cognitive terminology, frame-based terminology, and frame semantics. The article gives a brief overview of the development of computer virology with reference to mental framing of the key aspects in the field. A frame is considered as part of context and a situation model representing a reallife event. Ch. Fillmore’s frame semantics and the identification of deep cases or semantic roles are used as the main method of data analyses. We have analyzed the most typical plans of semantic roles’ distribution in the frame VIRUS. The semantic roles of the frame VIRUS include Agent, Counteragent, Object, Addressee, Patient, Result, and Instrument. It has been found that besides the most distinctive distribution of semantic roles in the frame VIRUS, showing that the malicious program is conceptualized as the aggressor and a computer or its user as a victim, which correspond to the roles of the Agent and the Patient, there might be the frames with a virus in the role of the Counteragent, the Object, the Result, the Instrument, the Patient, and even the Place. We come to the conclusion that analysis of the roles’ distribution helps to determine relations among the event participants and the way the situation is conceptualized and represented in the form of mental models in human minds.

visual metaphor. We aim at developing a reliable method for visual metaphors identification. For this purpose we have employed up-to-date methods for linguistic metaphor identification and conceptual metaphors modelling, which have been modified in compliance with the data specifics. The Procedure has been applied for the extraction of knowledge, transferred via visual metaphors in the World War II propaganda posters by KUKRYNIKSI. The results obtained include visual metaphors and conceptual metaphor models simulated in the process of the six-step visual metaphor analysis, which provide deeper understanding and profound interpretation of the artists’ intention; modification and validation of the methods for visual metaphors identification. In conclusion we discuss the perspectives of using the methods for other types of data.

Asymmetry in communicants’ knowledge causes ambiguity and conceptual misrepresentation.
Precise knowledge transfer in the context of transdiscursive communication can be achieved by means of efficient knowledge adjustment in accordance with the level of communicants’ professional competence. We call this adjustment transdiscursive knowledge translation.
Since specialized discourse is terminologically-rich, and terms accumulate segments of special and background knowledge in a compressed way, the study of transdiscursive knowledge translation inevitably includes research into metaphoricity of terms.
Recent developments in metaphorical nature of terms (Alekseeva 2002, Isaeva 2014, Mishlanova 2008) have shown potential of employing the method of Three Dimensional Metaphorical Modelling that allows us to examine terminology from lexicological, cognitive and pragmatic perspectives. In this respect terms are considered as part of language, thought and communication.
Terms as a linguistic signification of a set of categorized concepts grounded in the neurological structure of human brain (Schank and Abelson, 1977) nominate socially shared and individual event representation. This nomination is realized in in discourse in the process of professional communication and is represented in specialized texts.
Thus we aim at researching linguistic tools for efficient transdiscursive knowledge translation. One of them is deliberate term usage. In the scope of transdiscursive knowledge transfer this linguistic tool has an observable effect known as reframing and results in optimized knowledge communication.

We explore knowledge communication in the framework of cognitive-discursive approach, that sugges... more We explore knowledge communication in the framework of cognitive-discursive approach, that suggests the complex study of complementary knowledge representation in language, in thought, and in communication. From this perspective, metaphor in computer virology discourse is studied as a cognitive tool of three dimensional knowledge translation.
To analyze the data with consideration of three types of knowledge representation in discourse we have elaborated the method of Three Dimensional Metaphor Modelling (3DMM) meant to constrain semantic, conceptual and pragmatic aspects of metaphor. The method is based on the following: Thesaurus modelling [Baranov, Karaulov 1991, Mishlanova, Utkina 2008], MIPVU [Pragglejaz Group 2007, Steen 2010], Five step method
[Steen 2007, 2010], Frame semantics [Fillmore 1976]. The procedure includes three
successive stages: communicative-pragmatic analysis, semantic analysis and conceptual analysis.
The research is carried out on texts specialized for an IT expert readership (professional genre) and texts targeting a lay readership (popular genre) extracted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA).
As a result two metaphorical models of the concept VIRUS in Professional and Popular computer virology discourse have been reconstructed. By means of statistic analysis we have revealed common and specific features in the models.
Qualitative analysis including semantic roles differentiation [Fillmore 1976, Apresyan 1995] has shown disagreement in the contents of the conceptual frames VIRUS in Professional and
Popular computer virology discourse. The disagreement results from rearrangement of semantic roles.
As far as professional IT communication includes experts who intend to stop virus influence, the metaphorical model of the concept VIRUS in professional computer virology discourse
implies the idea of SUPPRESSION OF AGGRESSION. Meanwhile nonprofessional communication includes users who suffer from virus malicious activity thereby in popular computer security discourse the idea of SUCCUMBING TO AGGRESSION is implied.

Over the past few years the interest in computer virology discourse analysis and conceptualization of special knowledge in the corresponding area has increased due to the spread of computer viruses and the rapid development of information computer technologies. In this context special attention should be paid to metaphorization being a powerful tool of special knowledge acquisition.
One of the most effective methods of studying the metaphorization process is constructing metaphorical models that represent conceptual source domains and contain elements connected by different relations (function, cause, example etc.).
The aim of the study is to build the metaphorical model of the concept “computer virus”. To achieve the purpose we have analyzed texts on computer virology (monographs, scientific articles, computer expert reports etc.) and studied several corpora which enabled us to construct a concordance with the key lexical unit “virus”. The texts in the concordance were chronologically divided into three periods covering the main stages of computer virology evolution. The periods are determined by the phases of computer technology development, i.e. creation of electronic computer, spread of PC and portable data media and appearance of World Wide Web.
The next step of the investigation was to find relations between the development of computer virology and medical science. The study proved that the three stages of computer virology evolution correlate to the periods of medical reality, such as advances in genetics, infectology and epidemiology.
The final step of the study was to construct a taxonomic metaphorical model of the concept “computer virus” which includes taxons “linguistics”, “manufacturing”, “habitation”, “war”, “AIDS”, “biological weapons” and “criminality”.
As a result of the undertaken conceptual analysis and metaphorical modeling possible inferences of the existing tendency in the process of computer virus conceptualization were made that contribute to laying a constructive platform for special knowledge acquisition and the development of sophisticated methods for solving technical problems."

This work was performed as part of the cognitive-discursive paradigm of modern linguistics.
The object of the investigation is the concept “computer virus” and its linguistic representation in a computer virology discourse. The research is based on the texts from the Corpus of Contemporary American English.
The first stage of the linguistic and conceptual investigation of “computer virus” is based on Metaphor Investigation Process (MIP) developed by the Metaphor Lab at VU University Amsterdam. The identification procedure includes the following main steps: reading the text/discourse, acquiring a general understanding of its meaning, selecting lexical units from the text/discourse, and establishing their contextual and contemporary meanings. If the contextual meaning contrasts with the basic meaning but can be understood in comparison with it, the lexical unit is marked as metaphorical (Pragglejaz Group 2007).
The second stage of the investigation is based on the method of metaphorical modeling, which implies taxonomic categorization, developed by S. Mishlanova (Mishlanova 2002). On the basis of corpus analysis a metaphorical model “computer virus” was constructed. The model represents a taxonomic structure, which includes the basic taxons “man as a social subject,” “man as a biological creature,” and “animal.” The most representative areas of source domains included, “military operation” (represented by such linguistic metaphors as attack, strike, defeat), “diseases” (crippling, succumb, infected), and “interpersonal relations” (be angry at, enter into, want).
At the current stage of computer virology development, metaphor plays a very important role as a universal tool for conceptualisation and categorization of new knowledge that relies on the preceding experience of the person participating in the cognitive process. The structure of the concept "computer virus" is a hierarchical system, fixing the unscientific notion of a computer virus, the peculiarities of its functioning, and the ways to combat this malicious program.
