It is a key moment, a border between worlds, far too important not to receive further attention.
The studies, presented here together, aim to respond to new demands: the art object remains at the centre, but with a new search for its context. This context would be unthinkable without the key concept of co-existence – between popular and elite culture, popes and emperors, pagans and Christians. As well as between liturgy – intrinsically necessary to the Christian world – and patronage – the intellectual project which stems from a cultural concept. Moreover, co-existence is crucial between the mindset of the Roman elites (the tradition inscribed in the city’s DNA), and new internal and external demands arising from this rich moment in the history of Rome.
The fifth-century, studied in this book, is the moment in which future and past meet, and Antique and Christian coincide. An artistic moment with only one identifying feature: its incredibly rich complexity.

suggest that the hall had nine windows, three of which were
closed in a late antique reconstruction. The four columns placed
in a rectangle inside the building remain difficult to explain.
Their dimensions indicate that the columns were not part of a
free-standing “canopy” but that they were linked to the roof. In
the late reconstruction, two of the four columns became part
of the east wall of the main hall of the Synagogue, while in the
first phase the four columns probably were surrounded by free
space and had a different function.

This article illustrates the references to water in the sculptures and inscriptions of the fourth and fifth-century phases of the Lateran baptistery in Rome. This decoration shows that the water was a symbol ofboth li fe and death: the death of the sinner and the life of God, to which baptism gave access.

A good example is the U-shaped basilica in the complex of San Lorenzo fuori le mura in Rome, excavated in 1950. Usually it is identified with a basilica built in the early fourth century by Emperor Constantine, according to the sixth-century source Liber Pontificalis. Other scholars have preferred to see this fifth-century basilica in the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina, but this paper stresses that recent research in other fields makes this identification is impossible, concluding, for this and other reasons, that the basilica of Sixtus III probably is San Lorenzo fuori le mura but t...

The other 34 churches are treated in brief chapters of 2-3 pp., with the final, longer one dedicated to San Vitale itself, for a total of 35 chapters, which is quite a lot. Yet, as these chapters are clear, balanced and up-to-date, and well illustrated with photographs and drawings (many by M. J. Johnson himself), the book becomes an important and useful reference for the whole of this particular group of Early Christian churches. Of the 35, only three are still standing: San Vitale in Ravenna, SS. Sergius and Bacchus in Constantinople, and St. George in Izraa (Syria). Alongside the more famous churches, the book also draws attention to many important but little known octagonal buildings. The author pays particular attention to the metrology and the use of the Roman and Byzantine foot in the planning. As the Byzantine foot began to replace the Roman one in the third decade of the 6th c., he uses the identification of the foot as an instrument also for the dating of buildings which have been poorly documented.

Only Alfarano gives their measures. The problem is that, according to him, the windows were so broad that it is difficult to imagine that there originally was one window above each intercolumnium. For this reason, most modern reconstructions show one window above every second intercolumnium, making the church much darker than most other early Christian churches. It seems more probable that Alfarano’s width was wrong, that there was a window above every intercolumnium. Assuming that the windows were not only high but also wide as those of San Paolo, that is 2,4 m, with an interaxial distance between columns of 3,9 m, they would have been separated by a pier 1,5 m wide, which would be perfectly normal among Roman churches

In SS.
