Depending on their site, osteophytes can bring on clinical manifestations such as dysphagia, hoarseness, and stridor. We discuss an interesting case of a young adult patient who presented with dysphagia along with neck discomfort, and on investigation was found to be suffering from diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. Here, we briefly portray the presenting features, radiographic findings, and management options.

Research paper thumbnail of Do intraoral radial forearm free flaps re-mucosalise and is candida infection relevant?

Seven of the patients had received postoperative radiotherapy. In eight patients the clinical appearance of the flap was similar in colour to that of adjacent normal oral mucosa; the remaining flaps retained the appearance of normal volar forearm skin. Histological examination of the flaps showed varying degrees of telangiectasia and mild chronic inflammation. In only two patients was superficial infection by candida hyphae identified. Intraoral free flaps, although clinically resembling oral mucosa, retain histological features of skin, at least within the period under study. The erythematous clinical appearance was not correlated with the presence of chronic fungal infection, but reflected the presence of vascular repair tissue, telangiectasia and mild residual chronic inflammation.

Treatment options such as autograft with non-vascularized fibula and cancellous bone graft, vascularized bone graft, and bone transportation are highly demanding on the part of surgeons and hospital setups and have many drawbacks. This study aims to analyze the outcome of patients with wide diaphyseal bone gap treated with induced-membrane technique (Masquelet technique). This study included 9 patients (7 males and 2 females), all with tibial bone-gap. Eight of the 9 patients were infected and in 3 patients there was associated large soft tissue defect requiring flap cover. This technique is two-stage procedure. Stage I surgery included debridement, fracture stabilization, application of spacer between bone ends, and soft tissue reconstruction. Stage II surgery included removal of spacer with preservation of...

Research paper thumbnail of An Update on Secondary Metabolites from Haloxylon Species

These compounds belong to the classes, fatty acids and their esters, triglycerides, alcohols, steroids and their glycosides, phenol derivatives, coumarins, alkaloids of different classes, monocyclic naphthene derivatives, terpenes and flavonoids, and their glycosides. This present review will discuss the secondary metabolites 1-107 of different classes isolated from Haloxylon species with biological activities up to 2010.

Research paper thumbnail of Giraffokeryx (Artiodactyla: Mammalia) Remains From the Lower Siwaliks of Pakista; Pakistan J. Zool., vol. 44(6), pp. 1623-1631, 2012

The material comprises predominantly isolated teeth, and a few fragments of maxilla and mandible. The well preserved upper and lower dentition allows recognizing the presence of Giraffokeryx cf. punjabiensis in the Chinji Formation of the Lower Siwaliks. A detailed description of the fossils and their taxonomic classification is being provided. The validity of the new species Giraffokeryx chinjiensis Sarwar, 1990 is discussed and the synonymy with Giraffa priscilla is proposed.

Research paper thumbnail of Possible mechanism of cardiac depressant activity of Berberis orthobotrys r-oots in isolated rabbit heart

(B.o.) has been reported to have antihypertensive effect in different experimental models. The aim of present study was to evaluate the possible antihypertensive mechanism. Aqueous methanolic extract of B.o. roots and its various fractions namely (ethyl acetate, n-butanol or aqueous) in different concentrations (10 ng/mL, 100 ng/mL, I pg/mL, 10 pg/mL, 100 pg/mL ) were evaluated in isolated perfused rabbit heart to assess their effect on force of contraction, HR and perfusion pressure. The crude extract of B.o. and its fractions exhibited a significant decrease in heart rate, contractility and perfusion pressure of isolated rabbit heart, however, butanolic fraction produced more prominent effect and was selected for further study. The effects of butanol fraction were not blocked by atropine (10' M) in isolated perfused heart. However, butanol fraction significantly blocked the effects of adrenaline (10' M). It is therefore conceivable that cardiac depressant activity of B.o. butanol fraction might be due to the presence of certain 3-blocking agents which might be responsible for antihypertensive effect However, further experiments are required to isolate the active compound(s) and elucidate exact mechanism of action.
