June 4, 2024 | June Retreat 2024 | Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times: Applied Ethics | Plum Village France, Upper Hamlet

This Dharma Talk was recorded on June 4, 2024 in Upper Hamlet, Plum Village France. It is the 3rd talk of the series of talks given in the 2024 June Retreat held in Plum Village, France, with the theme: “”Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times: Applied Ethics.”

Brother Phap Huu explains how ethics in Buddhism is always seen as a “path” (“đạo đức”) that every practitioner is walking, and not as a dogmatic or rigid set of rules. With an explanation of the Eightfold Noble Path and the story of The Pine Gate, Br Phap Huu explains how each one of us can intentionally cultivate our core values and allow them to flourish.

The heart of this talk explores the Plum Village understanding of “”active nonviolence”” and the many deep ways of speaking a language of peace. Br Phap Huu addresses questions including:
How can we confront and transform the cycle of violence that begins in our own hearts?
How can we work to transform violence and injustice without other-ing the “”other side””?
How can we engage with true nonviolence to relieve discrimination, ignorance, greed, violence and hatred?
How we can practice with our own internal complexes to deconstruct systems of discrimination and decolonize our minds?

The talk closes with the song “”Prayer for Land””, written and performed by the monastics, and based on the poem by Thich Nhat Hanh.
