This paper introduces the performance-based research led by the author in the area of collective ... more This paper introduces the performance-based research led by the author in the area of collective decision-making and musical metacreative performances with audience participation. A series of six experiments (or interactive music performances) has been created in order to test alternatives to the implementation of features in metacreative systems aiming to foster engagement and improve interaction between performers and audience. This paper describes the evolution of the solutions sequentially adopted in these experiments with regard to control data, sound generation and user experience.
Resumo: Neste artigo tratamos das ramificações geradas a partir da experiência de Hermeto Pascoal... more Resumo: Neste artigo tratamos das ramificações geradas a partir da experiência de Hermeto Pascoal junto ao seu grupo, nos atentando especificamente aos trabalhos realizados pelos músicos Itiberê Zwarg, Jovino Santos Neto e André Marques. Para tanto, buscamos apoio nas ciências humanas, no intuito de organizar as descrições e compreender elementos musicais, estéticos e sociais presentes nessa experiência global. Tomando como alicerce os conceitos de "relação associativa" (Weber, 1994) e "rede" (Bauman e May, 2010), tratamos das duas diferentes acepções possíveis acerca da expressão "Escola Jabour"; tal exposição nos auxilia na reflexão acerca do alcance da obra de Pascoal, principalmente a partir de seu trabalho com o grupo que se estabeleceu entre os anos de 1981 e 1993. Por fim, procuramos evidenciar características que possam denotar as ramificações verificadas como uma "escola", ou uma corrente estilística. Palavras-chave: Hermeto Pascoal; ...

This paper introduces Performance Without Borders and Embodied iSound, two sound installations pe... more This paper introduces Performance Without Borders and Embodied iSound, two sound installations performed at the 2016 Peninsula Arts Contemporary Music Festival at Plymouth University. Sharing in common the use of smartphones to afford real-time audience participation, two bespoke distributed computer systems (Sherwell and Levinsky Music, respectively). Whilst the first one implements a cloud-based voting system, the second implements movement tracking and iBeacon-based indoor-positioning to control the choice of soundtracks, audio synthesis, and surround sound positioning, among other parameters. The general concepts of the installations, in particular design and interactive possibilities afforded by the computer systems are presented.

This paper introduces how a participatory performance named Embodied iSound gathered a number of ... more This paper introduces how a participatory performance named Embodied iSound gathered a number of technologies, sound and music in order to explore the experience of sonic crossings. The main components of the experience are introduced, from the inception of design, inspired by contemporary social and political events, to the implementation of technical solutions. Among these, participants' gestures and movements are tracked in order to control sound generation and spatialization. The physicality of a performance space is used to enable an allinclusive listening experience that activates all senses as well as personal and collective memories. The performance was evaluated by the audience who provided encouraging feedback, in particular regarding embodiment, interaction, and immersiveness.

In this article we address the ramifications of Hermeto Pascoal’s experience with his group, in p... more In this article we address the ramifications of Hermeto Pascoal’s experience with his group, in particular the work by musicians Itiberê Zwarg, Jovino Santos Neto and André Marques. To this end and, in order to organize the descriptions and understand musical, aesthetic and social elements present in this global experience, we seek support in the Human Sciences. Based on the concepts of “associative relationship” (Weber, 1994) and “network” (Bauman and May, 2010), we analyze the two different meanings of the expression “Jabour School”. This account helps us to reflect on the scope of Pascoal’s work, especially on his work with the group established between 1981 and 1993. Finally, we seek to highlight characteristics that may denote the ramifications verified as a “school”, or a stylistic stream.
