Even before Building Services became a main hallmark in buildings, in order to face sanitary and comfort increasing needs, pioneering experiences had improved design skills of professionals. After being for ages decided, most of all, by construction passive features, indoor climate went under the setting of installations and plants, representing the most significant shift of paradigm in the modern age’s construction history.
This change being not without consequences, the essays collected are focused to show how deep is the connection between architectural design, comfort requirements and environmental awareness throughout the long 19th century.
Taken into account the differences between different European Countries, the focused topic will be of interest to architects and designers which are concerned with environmental design, in order to define a deeper knowledge of heritage behaviour face to the climate requests, particularly going towards a future in which energy savings and fuel consumption reduction will border our ways.
Contributions by Melanie Bauernfeind, Marco Cofani, Magdalena Daniel, Emmanuelle Gallo, Alberto Grimoldi, Dean Hawkes, Angelo Giuseppe Landi, Mattias Legnér, Henrik Schoenefeldt.

Contributi di Anna Boato, Anna Decri e Filippo Tassara, Angelo Landi, Alberto Grimoldi, Marica Forni, Emanuela Villa, Neil Sturrock, Bernhard Rösch, André Guillerme e Carlo Manfredi.

examples at Ostia, Pompei, Weissenburg. The idea of the warm floor was employed again since 19th
century as proper confirmation of neoclassical style and sophisticated application for metal pipes.
Warming and ventilation proceed together according to the old idea of comfort strictly connected to
renewed air. The main examples have been described by technical handbooks in Germany and
England and, later, in Italy.
During last century hypocaust changed in radiating panels and was widely employed for
monuments restoration too while, presently, the problem of their conservation begins.

Among them one can find convents and other places now converted into public spaces (theatre, museum). These repurposed buildings still evidence the events manifested in them. On the contrary, the area known as the Herradura (the Horseshoe) has a different history. Its buildings are currently uninhabitable, including more than seventy cave-houses that were gradually abandoned during the 1970's. The houses are an example of a way of life prevalent in the Upland and its proximity to the town center and the unique characteristics of its typology present an opportunity to focus on topics that permit us to rethink the preservation of these spaces not only for its historic values, but also in terms of sustainability and urban development.

Peschiera del Garda, located on the southern edge of the Garda Lake, still shows the walls of its ancient fortress almost untouched . It was an extremely important military outpost for the Venetian Republic and the Austrian Empire.
Within the pentagonal walls of the main fortress, the Habsburg Army added new and imposing buildings modifying the town plan. A headquarter, two large barracks, the grand Army Hospital and the provender ward were built.
All these buildings have been abandoned and neglected for more than twenty years, while economic growth has allowed urban sprawl all around the fortress, leaving the old town almost deserted and its buildings as mere scenarios.
This paper aims at showing how future goals should necessarily involve a clever and compatible reuse of the fortress and its abandoned buildings through their protection and conservation, in order to foresee a more balanced development for the future.
